• Dr. John J. LamannaDr. John J. Lamanna began serving as the Interim Superintendent of Schools on August 8, 2022. He brings 45 years of counseling and education experience to the position and is very familiar with the operations of the school division after having served on the Frederick County School Board from 2002-2019, including seven years as Board Chair (2006-2010 and 2016-2019).

    Lamanna was employed by the Leary Educational Foundation throughout his entire career and served as a residential counselor (1976-1977), counseling supervisor (1977-1979), Chief Operating Officer (1979-2007) and Executive Director (2007-2021) at the Timber Ridge School in Frederick County. The Timber Ridge School serves seriously emotionally disturbed and behaviorally disordered adolescent boys. Following his retirement as the Executive Director of the Timber Ridge School, Lamanna spent three months serving as the Acting Executive Director of the Sinclair Medical Clinic in 2022.

    Lamanna has a bachelor’s degree in social science as well as a master’s degree in counseling and personal guidance from St. Bonaventure University. He also has a Doctor of Education degree in counselor education and student personnel services from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. In addition, Lamanna is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, National Board Certified Counselor and Board Approved Clinical Supervisor.

    Throughout his career, Lamanna has been engaged in community service and volunteering his time. He currently serves on the Bright Futures Frederick/Winchester Board, the Child Advocacy Center Board, the Frederick County Department of Social Services Board, the Timbrook Achievement Center Advisory Board, the Northern Shenandoah Valley Substance Abuse Coalition’s Service Gap Committee (Chair), and the Nonprofit Alliance of the Northern Shenandoah Valley Advisory Board. Lamanna is also a past Chair of the Top of Virginia Regional Chamber as well as a past Chair of the Mountain Vista Governor’s School Board .
