417R - Accidents, Emergencies, and Medical Care

    1. Accidents

      All accidents must be reported immediately to the principal or his/her designee. A record including time the accident occurred, a description of it, the student involved, and supervising teachers should be maintained at the school.

      Students must report any accident, no matter how slight, to the teacher in charge when it occurs. If treatment by a physician is required, the injured student must report it to the principal or his designee upon returning to school.

    2. Recommending Additional Medical Aid

      Except in emergencies, school personnel shall not recommend treatment by a specific physician. Physician selection shall be the responsibility of the parent or guardian of the student needing medical attention unless the student sustains an injury that could presumably be life threatening or would cause serious harm if not treated quickly.

      School personnel are prohibited from recommending the use of psychotropic medications for any student. School health staff, classroom teachers or other school professionals are not prohibited from recommending that a student be evaluated by an appropriate medical practitioner. In addition, school personnel may consult with a medical practitioner with the written consent of the student’s parent or guardian.
      Psychotropic medications mean those medications the prescribed intention of which is to alter mental activity or state, including, but not limited to, antipsychotic, antidepressant, and anxiolytic medication and behavior-altering medication.

    3. Special Medication Administration

      A student who must take a non-prescriptive medication during the school day must bring it in a manufacturer-labeled container with a written request from the parent or guardian to the nurse in the clinic or to the principal or his/her designee in the main office. The request must specify dosage and the time the medicine is to be administered. Any exceptions to the manufacturer's recommendation will require an additional note from the student's physician.
      The parent/guardian of a student who must take a physician-prescribed medication for a period of one month or more must provide the school with a completed Request and Authorization/Parent Consent for Administering Long- Term Prescription Medication During School Hours. When applicable, an Asthma Action Plan form may be used instead of or in addition to the medication form.

      A student who must take other physician-prescribed medication during the school day must bring that medication in a pharmacy labeled container with a written request from the parent or guardian to the school nurse in the clinic or to the principal or his/her designee in the main office. Any exceptions to the physician's prescription will require an additional note from the same physician.

    4. Special Allergic Administration

      The parent of any student identified as being highly allergic to an environmental substance, including certain foods or insect stings or bites, and needing emergency care when exposed will assume responsibility for providing the school with the prescribed emergency kit or medication. The parent will also be responsible for annually completing the Request and Authorization/Parent Consent for Administering Long-Term Prescription Medication During School Hours form.
