Middletown originally opened as a high school in 1909. The first building still stands on Route 11 in Middletown. The school was later used as an elementary school for students in grades 1-6.
On September 5, 1989, a new building was opened on the current site between Route 11 and Interstate 81 just outside the town limits. A bell from the original school can be found in the lobby and serves as a reminder of the rich tradition and history of Middletown Elementary.
The current facility was expanded in 1998 adding seven additional classrooms, two additional resource rooms, storage areas at each grade level and an elevator to allow handicap access to the stage. The school has a library facility, gymnasium, music and art room.
The school property is nestled in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley with scenic views of the surrounding hills and mountains.
