Police Drug Dogs

Frederick County Public Schools seeks to maintain a safe and orderly environment in all schools. In an effort to deter the presence of illegal substances at Frederick County Public Schools, the schools, in conjunction with the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, will conduct random drug searches of occupied school buildings. Schools will be secured in an internal “hold” during such searches. These searches will consist of several teams of trained law enforcement officers using drug-sniffing dogs. The dogs possess a passive disposition and will be utilized in searches of both the building and parking areas. If a dog alerts to an area, then individualized suspicion exists for the search of the area as well as the space(s) and items in the vicinity. School administrators shall conduct any searches and/or student interviews deemed necessary as a result of a dog alerting to an area. At the conclusion of the search, the school will resume normal activities.
