Season of Celebration and Success May 1-29
  • Armel Elementary School Fifth Grade Teacher Rebecca Shollay has championed our daughter throughout the year. Our daughter went back to school for the first time since COVID started (2nd grade for her). As a 5th grader she has THRIVED and is enjoying school and all her success. I couldn’t imagine a better teacher for this last year of elementary school.

Armel Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Ryan Mindyas has been attentive and helped my daughter grow in so many ways this year. We went into this school year with my daughter expressing a lot of concerns and fears over starting 3rd grade. She had heard it was harder and there would be homework to do. She wasn't sure how to manage it all including knowing she would have two SOLs to complete this year. She has had some ups and downs, but Mr. Mindyas has made it clear that he is not only willing to listen to concerns, he acts on them. Not only has she had a wonderfully successful year academically and socially, she has found her love of school again. She is still nervous about SOLs, but knows she has a teacher that cares and will help her through that worry if needed.

Armel Elementary School Second Grade Teacher Kelley Horner has been so helpful with my daughter’s transition for her first year in public school and eased my concerns. She has THRIVED and loves school. Mrs. Horner is so comforting and helpful.

Indian Hollow Elementary School Fourth Grade Teacher Julie Dale has been an amazing teacher and has helped tremendously. My daughter has come a long way with her struggles and improved so much. Her teacher has been amazing and works really hard with all her students!

Evendale Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Kathleen Nolan has been amazing with my daughter and she’s just awesome. My daughter started kindergarten this year. It was a very different adjustment than I thought it was going to be.

I want to thank Apple Pie Ridge Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Emily Teese and Kindergarten Instructional Assistant Janet Jenkins for making kindergarten so enjoyable and successful for my daughter this year. Every day she was excited to go to school to learn new things and every day she came home with a story to tell about how much she had learned. I truly believe her love for school is due to her direct interactions with Ms. Teese and Ms. Jenkins. She loves her teachers and classroom. Thank you both for kicking off her schooling so successfully!

Robert E. Aylor Middle School Art Teacher Michelle Herbert has made my transition into public school INCREDIBLE! I am a new teacher and she made me feel welcome and taught me everything I needed to know. We have collaborated, made plans and worked as a team to make the last few months of the year fly by! The students are all engaged and working hard and I have Mrs. Herbert to thank for that!

Admiral Richard E. Byrd Middle School Band Teacher William Norris has made such a positive influence on my son and runs an amazing music program. He has helped to nurture the love for music that my son has and encourage his growth.

James Wood High School Special Education Teacher Jonah Pearson stepped up to the plate and has gone above and beyond to help his students and to be supportive of me and other staff members. I am lucky to have gotten to work with him this year!

Armel Elementary School Custodian Bruce Ludwig has formed a trusting and supportive friendship with my son. This friendship has given the opportunity for my son to have a sense of purpose, something to look forward to and reduced anxiety about school. I can never thank Mr. Ludwig enough!

Redbud Run Elementary School First Grade Teacher Abigail Foura welcomed us with smiles and open arms when we moved into the area this year. She encouraged my daughter at school with positivity and engaging activities that made her feel smart and confident. I fell in love with Redbud Run because of such an excellent teacher. Her open communication and positivity encouraged my daughter to do her best and try new things!

I would like to thank Armel Elementary School Secretary Jennifer Miller, School Nurse Ann Stine, Kindergarten Teacher Rebekah Wallis and Instructional Assistant Kay Edens. This year was my son’s  first year in this school and I didn’t know anything about schooling in the United States. Thanks to all the staff at this school for helping me a lot . They are always helpful and pleasant to talk to. They give me all the information I need.

James Wood Middle School English Teacher Geneiveve James made me feel safe and secure in her classroom. She made sure that I'd be able to understand everything and she takes time to help us. Mrs. James was also so supportive of everything I chose to do.

Indian Hollow Elementary School First Grade Teacher Cassidy Rao has built a community in her room that makes my son feel comfortable just being his silly self. He has learned so much because she makes it fun, and he wants to do his best for her. My son has really come out of his shell this year and has said that he wants to stay in first grade because it is the "best grade."

I want to thank the Middletown Elementary School Special Education Teacher Estella Bagnal, First Grade Teacher Heather Walther, Special Instructional Assistants Annie Emswiller and Megan Carter, Secretary Sharon Johns, Instructional Assistant McKenzie Copeland for being amazing, patient, going above and beyond and making the second half of our son’s first grade year unforgettable! My son started Middletown right after the holiday break. Since January, he has made significant academic, emotional and social strides! He loves MES and this is a true reflection of the amazing staff and supports he has been given. Transitions are always tough, but MES administrators and staff went above and beyond to make him feel accepted and comfortable.

Orchard View Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Laura Ridgeway has changed the life of my child. She helped him work through personal struggles and helped him figure out how to cope when he makes mistakes. His academics have SOARED this year under her care. She is kind and thoughtful and goes above and beyond for him daily. He loves coming to school. Mrs. Ridgeway is more just a teacher, she is a life-changer! His whole attitude about school is completely different.

Bass-Hoover Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Sarah Painter is very caring of her students. My daughter was struggling in school and outside. Mrs. Painter and I were quick to get on the same page and get her some help. She helped her inside of school by helping her get tutoring after school. Without the help of Mrs. Painter my child would still be struggling. We thank her so much for everything she did to help us.

I have to give Greenwood Mill Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Danielle Homans a shout out for valuing my daughter, showing an interest in her, being patient with her and making her excited to learn. She has my third grader’s heart! My daughter loves going to school to not just learn from her, but to be with her! My daughter’s reading and confidence have improved, and that is definitely the work of Mrs. Homans. Teaching is often a thankless profession, but I want Mrs. Homans to know how much my daughter and our whole family values her work. My daughter feels seen and valued by her teacher. Mrs. Homans is making a difference and her hard work and dedication show every day when my daughter gets home from school. Thank you, Mrs. Homans, for all you do for all of your students!

I would like to thank Greenwood Mill Elementary School Special Education Teacher Kimberly Schreckengost for the care and dedication she has shown my child. My daughter came to Greenwood Mill at the beginning of the 2022-23 school year after we moved from Utah. She was so far behind in her reading and math and really struggling. She made very little progress in class or in her special education time during her first grade year, and I was nervous about what a new school would bring. When we had her first IEP meeting, I was so impressed with Ms. Schreckengost and the goals and ideas she had for helping my daughter. During the year Ms. Schreckengost has been communicative with me, always willing to meet or give input, and she has brought my daughter AT LEAST a full school year forward in her reading and writing. While there is still work to be done and things we are doing to help my daughter, I will forever be grateful for Ms. Schreckengost.

Greenwood Mill Elementary School Second Grade Teacher Theresa Montgomery has provided my daughter with a great second grade experience. We moved across the country just in time for school to start. My daughter has some learning delays and struggles that we had been concerned about. This made me especially nervous for her to start at a new school. Mrs. Montgomery has been wonderful with her. She is always open to communicating with me regarding concerns, and she is proactive in reaching out when she has any concerns or successes to share. Mrs. Montgomery made my daughter’s adjustment a success and was heavily present and informed on her special education strategies and IEP. We are so grateful for her!

Greenwood Mill Elementary School Fourth Grade Teacher Whitney Payne has been amazing all year! We can't thank you enough!

Admiral Richard E. Byrd Middle School Ag Teacher Kathy Lineburg has been amazing this year! The kids love her. We couldn't ask for a better teacher.

I would like to thank Greenwood Mill Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Allison Yost and Instructional Assistant Jennifer Volkmann for helping my son to have a great kindergarten year. We moved across the country just in time for my youngest to start Kindergarten at GMES. Aside from being an incredibly gifted teacher, Ms. Yost was mindful of my son’s recent changes and did an amazing job of helping him adjust. Her classroom is a place where the kids feel cared for and a place they are excited to be. She and Ms. Volkmann have done a beautiful job creating a healthy, vibrant class culture. Our family is grateful to them.

Middletown Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Criste Allen is an inspirational educator! Not only has she worked incredibly hard to grow professionally, she has revolutionized how she is teaching reading and her students have made impressive gains! She also prioritized working with her colleagues and providing unique experiences for her students. They have worked so hard on video projects and Mrs. Allen's family showcase of the videos was a testament to her hard work and creativity!

I would like to thank Greenwood Mill Elementary School Fourth Grade Teacher Jessica Sevinsky for classroom policies and material that inspires interest and confidence. My son is in Ms. Sevinsky's class this year. He has loved the social studies curriculum and learning about Virginia History. Our family visited Jamestown for a day during Spring Break at his request. I am grateful to Ms. Sevinsky for the way she taught this material. I also wanted to recognize her test-retaking policy. My son studies for all his tests, but is not a great test taker and that can be discouraging for him. Ms. Sevinsky allows her students to review their tests and retake them. My son has improved his test scores pretty dramatically every single time he retakes one. This is been helpful for his academic confidence. It has also been a valuable lesson in putting in effort and learning from mistakes.

We are so grateful for Greenwood Mill Elementary School Speech Therapist Lisa McClung. She has been my kindergartener's speech therapist this school year. She is engaging, patient and delightful. My son enjoys speech therapy and has made excellent progress this year. So often special education and special area teachers can get overlooked, but for students who need them, they are EVERYTHING. We are so grateful for her.

James Wood Middle School Sixth Grade Social Studies Teacher Heather Gay ALWAYS goes out of her way to be a supportive and positive person in her students’ lives. She still has an amazing relationship with my senior and she is my 6th grader’s go to person at school.

Apple Pie Ridge Elementary School Special Education Teacher Maria Grimm has been such an amazing teacher for our daughter. She works with special education students and she has helped our daughter make such huge strides this year. Her love for her job and her students doesn’t go unnoticed or unappreciated. We are forever thankful for Ms. Grimm as she will always be a big part in our daughter’s story in her positive experiences in learning. She moves mountains for each of her students and she shows them so much love and compassion. Our daughter is an amazing girl and Ms. Grimm plays a huge roll in why.

Our daughter has blossomed in Kindergarten! Armel Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Jennifer Stinnette, Special Education Teacher Melissa Cotton and Instructional Assistant Melinda Mundell have helped our daughter gain confidence in attending "big school" and we are amazed by how much she has learned over the past year. She comes home every day with exciting accounts of her day and all the new things she has learned. Thank you for all your magic, it is very much appreciated!

We would like to thank NREP Early Childhood Special Education Teacher Alex Cooper. Our son started school in August not being able to communicate at all what he wanted or needed. As a three year old you can only imagine how hard this was for him and us. Mrs. Cooper has worked tirelessly with our son and it shows. The dedication she put in to working with our autistic son speaks for itself. He now comes home able to say a handful of words and can tell me what color something is and knows his letters. Again this is the same child who, in August, had a hard time saying help me please when needed help. Mrs. Cooper plays a big role in the why he has progressed so well along with everyone at NREP. NREP deserves the world. The love every single adult shows each one of their students is amazing. From the front office staff, janitors, resource officer, and the teachers everyone is amazing. They have made being a special education parent a lot easier with the love they have for all. You cannot convince me otherwise that any other school deserves any more recognition than NREP! The heart that they all have to be a piece of each child’s puzzle in the foundation of their future is something to never take for granted. I appreciate every single person in NREP and that school deserves everything.

Thank you to Armel Elementary School Music Teacher Rebecca Dellinger for inspiring our daughter with your passion for music! She comes home humming and hums along with almost every song she hears. She likes to line up her stuffed animals and hold music class. She even wears a play microphone and gives directions for correct behavior when one of the animals doesn't sit up correctly. She always looks forward to music class!

I would like to thank Robert E. Aylor Middle School Science Teachers Melinda Walters and Meredith Bauserman, Social Studies Teachers Phil Carpenter and Ryan Whittle, Math Teacher Nancy Heagerty and English Teacher Stefanie Kamerman for being so collaborative and always looking out for and respecting each other. I am sure I could vouch for more than myself, but this year we were all on the same page. There wasn't a day that I knew that my coworkers didn't have my back or were there if I needed anything! All the laughs and lunch stories we have shared, I'm sure, have helped some of us through some tough times this year. I wouldn't trade them for anyone else. For those moving on, I wish you the best in your future endeavors, but those who are staying, let's run it back! Thanks ya'll!

I would like to thank Greenwood Mill Elementary School Fifth Grade Teacher David Marker. My son has always been quite good at school. Academic understanding comes quite naturally to him and he doesn't always feel challenged in the classroom. Mr. Marker has been so good for him this year. He gives him different work or projects to stretch him. He has the class keep their own planner and calendar and this has been an excellent growing experience for my son. We have had some good discussions at home about the value of learning, responsibility and curiosity.

Greenwood Mill Elementary School Instructional Assistant Jennifer Volkmann has been so helpful in my son's kindergarten class this year. She is a valuable and important member of the kindergarten team and has done an awesome job, with Ms. Yost, of creating a classroom culture where the students feel cared for and curious. Instructional Assistants are often overlooked in the education setting, but they are SO VERY IMPORTANT. They make such a difference in the classroom and elevate the level and efficiency of instruction.

Jordan Springs Elementary School Special Education Teachers Ashley Warner and Sarah Crosen have both done a tremendous job teaching our daughter the past 3 years! She has improved so much and she is thriving. Their love and care have blessed our entire family. We couldn’t ask for better support and love that she has been given!!

Greenwood Mill Elementary School First Grade Teacher Renae Kuhn is fabulous and made our son’s year the best! We were blessed to have our son placed into the best first grade classroom! Mrs. Kuhn has found a way to connect with the students and makes each day special. From allowing them to bring their favorite stuffed animal to class for rewards to having our son say how much he misses his teacher when it’s the weekend or a break. We are very thankful for her making each day special!

Middletown Elementary School Fourth Grade Teacher Mikayla Jolin has really hit the ground running and has handled her first year of teaching with an amazing amount of grace and hard work. She is a wonderful asset to our school!

Jordan Springs Elementary School First Grade Teacher Kelsey Potter has been a blessing to our son this year. She has the biggest heart and connects to each one of her students on a daily basis. It takes patience, positive relationships and determination to do what she does! Mrs. Potter even shows up to sports activities outside of school and the kiddos love it! Thank you so much for teaching my son not only the content but also how to accept others and how to continue to care for everyone. He has grown in so many ways and it's all because of you! When someone is not feeling well in our family he responds with "I wish you well." This is just an example of how much you have positively affected our son even outside of the classroom. It takes a team and you have gone above and beyond to make sure each student in your classroom is successful. Our son has enjoyed coming to school each day this year! He has grown, not only in his content areas, but also as a person. He has learned how to accept others, share, and how to communicate his frustrations all thanks to his amazing teacher, Mrs. Potter!

Millbrook High School Band Teacher James Tucker has gone above and beyond to ensure that the band programs are fun, and the grueling hours pay off. He keeps with the parent volunteers to make fun event breaks happen, and that no student skips the extracurricular activities due to cost. He spends almost every week and weekend year round with his students. Mr. Tucker's dedication to showing our kids just how great they can be is not something you see in every school, and our kids love him for it!

I would like to thank Stonewall Elementary School Second Grade Teacher Elizabeth Barnette and Title I Reading Teacher Kasey Noll for helping my daughter get the reading help that she needs and listening to my concerns. My daughter was new to the school this year as a second grader. On parent teacher night before the school year started, I met her current teacher, Mrs. Barnett. I informed her right away of my concerns from first grade and Kindergarten. Mrs. Barnette was very understanding right away and said that she would keep an eye on her and get back to me after she had collected her own data. Within three months or so after school started, she did reach out to me and said we would move forward on getting my daughter some help that she really needed. Shortly after that, my daughter started working with the reading specialist at the school, Mrs. Noll and then was also offered additional tutoring with Mrs. Barnette. As the school year progressed, I could see a change and improvement in her reading. However, we knew that she was not exactly where she needed to be. Now fast forward to the end of the year and we recently had an SSRT meeting and are moving forward with having her tested for a learning disability. Without Mrs. Barnette actually taking the time to listen to my concerns as a parent and truly taking action, my daughter wouldn't be getting the help that she needs and improved as much as she has so far. I am so thankful for all that the school has done for her this year and is continuing to do moving into the next school year.

I truly from the bottom of my heart want to thank each and every NREP teacher and staff member who has helped my son in his first time in school. They were so kind and courteous to me and my anxiety about him starting school. They assured me he would do great and thanks to the people they are, he has done so well! The fact of knowing he is with such good, caring people during the day really helps. Their patience and loving hearts are exactly what got him this far. I am so thankful for NREP and its staff. The principal is doing a great job with this school! Thank you ALL!

Indian Hollow Elementary School Nurse Lori Zollinger has gone above and beyond this year for our daughter. We had ups and downs trying to figure out some medical issues and she was there to support, help, and make our girl feel comfortable at school every step of the way! She has wonderful communication and has been such a help through everything! Thank you so much, Mrs. Zollinger, for helping us navigate this year’s obstacles!

Middletown Elementary School First Grade Teachers Meghan Gore and Elizabeth Nail are incredible teachers. They both had a major impact on my son's first grade year. They both truly care about their students. You both supported my son this year and loved him through it all! Thank you!!

Robert E. Aylor Middle School Cheer Coach Rachael Loveless has turned this program around. Coach Loveless is a mentor to both young and old. Her time with these young kids is precious and I know they definitely wish they were given more time under her coaching. From sideline to a routine to just teaching these middle school students life skills, she has definitely made an impact and should be recognized.

Stonewall Elementary School First Grade Teacher Carrie White is awesome and amazing. My son has come a long way in first grade. He was falling way behind until he got with Mrs. White. She is a positive encouragement for him daily. I am so glad she was his teacher this year. He has made major progress. Thank you for being the best and helping when help was needed.

Armel Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Ryan Mindyas welcomed my daughter with open arms and made her feel so welcome when she started a new school mid-year. She was so nervous and came home loving her new class from day one. We are so appreciative of Mr. Mindyas' fun, engaging classroom environment that makes children want to learn.

We would like to thank Greenwood Mill Elementary School Fifth Grade Teacher Karen Nace. We are new to the school system this year. My fifth grader was very apprehensive about starting a new school in fifth grade. Last August at open house, Ms. Nace shared a personal story with our daughter about her own experience starting a new school when she was young. Ms. Nace told her she knows exactly how she feels starting. She promised our daughter she would do everything to ensure a smooth transition and to make sure she fits in with the class. This is exactly what she has done this year. Every time I volunteer in Ms. Nace’s class, you can feel the love and sense of belonging of every student in that room. Teaching is extremely difficult right now, but Ms. Nace makes it look so easy. Thank you for loving our daughter and her classmates this year. You hold a special place in our hearts.

We would like to thank Fifth Grade Special Education Teacher Christine Barr and Fifth Grade Teacher Melissa Bartlett. If it wasn’t for these two teachers working together for our son, I don’t think he would be where he is now. They have pulled the best out of him, academically and personally. Our son went into fifth grade with Cs and Ds and by the second quarter, with both of their help, he has made it onto the A/B honor roll twice. They have both worked their hardest and helped him not only in school but helped him with skills to work on personally outside of school. They have cheered him on in everything, from his school work to the house madness where they stayed and cheered him on and filled him with so much confidence to never give up. Thank you both for giving our son the best step forward into middle school and sixth grade and having him set up to succeed with his Special Ed. We appreciate you both!

I would like to thank the entire staff at Indian Hollow Elementary School. You all are wonderful with the kids!

This year, Middletown Elementary School Literacy Coach Cynthia Petty, Instructional Coach Jenna Rinker and Instructional Assistant Stephanie Gore took on so much more than they expected. On top of their regular duties, they were tasked with becoming long-term substitutes, on top of their already demanding jobs. Without hesitation, they stepped up and rocked it. Thanks ladies!

James Wood Middle School Art Teacher Elizabeth Bange is hard working, nice, has a great personality and she is always there for us if we need it.

Gainesboro Elementary School Preschool Teacher Danielle Bailey and Instructional Assistant Manda Onda have both gone above and beyond for my daughter and every other kid in their preschool class. My daughter has learned so many social skills that I was hoping she'd master this year thanks to the patience of her teachers taking the time out to attend to her needs and feelings. As a mom who was nervous about my only child starting school, I've been much more at ease knowing she has been in great hands. Not only that, but she has ALWAYS been excited to go to school in the morning which made it much easier letting her go into this transition of her young life! I now have all the confidence that my kid is going to be ready for kindergarten this August thanks to these ladies.

Middletown Elementary School Fourth Grade Teacher Trisha Roy is an enthusiastic educator who pushes her students and her peers to work hard and have fun while doing it. She is full of great ideas and is an incredible team player!

I would like to thank Admiral Richard E. Byrd Middle School Band Teacher William Norris for his dedication to his students, all of his effort that goes into teaching them and for being a great role model.

I would like to thank Admiral Richard E. Byrd Middle School Spanish Teacher Marlene Pagan-Demirtas for her patience and perseverance in teaching Spanish. She does a great job.

I want to take a moment to thank Orchard View Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Mary Beth Kello for always making my girl want to come to class and be a better student. Thank you for all your creativity and keeping her engaged in learning! Thanks for making her grade year a positive one and for making learning fun for her.

I would like to thank Middletown Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Lauren Marrocco. When my daughter speaks of her third grade year, it nearly brings tears to her eyes. She remembers Mrs. Marrocco's silliness, kindness and simply the FEELING of her classroom! She cried on the last day, because she said there would never be a classroom to top that one! Her positivity and beautifully decorated classroom was amazing and will forever leave a little imprint on my daughter. Thank you for caring for each and every one of them!

My daughter attends Sherando High School and loves helping out her teachers, librarians and the school in general.

I admire Orchard View Elementary School First Grade Teacher Alexia Frey for her ability and strength to jump in as a first year teacher and create such a fun and engaging learning environment for my son! He is so shy and gets nervous about being away from family. Thank you for being so helpful and allowing him time to adjust! Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication to what you do each day!

Thank you to Orchard View Elementary School Special Education Teacher Sarah Edmondson for being you and bringing something extra to the classroom! Students are so lucky to get to work with you and so are we!

Orchard View Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Emily Turner is always thinking of ways to meet students where they are! Her creativity is endless. I admire how she greets and says good bye to her students each day! She makes each child feel so special to be an OVES cardinal!

Thank you to Orchard View Elementary School Instructional Assistant Jessica McGee for always doing what is best for kids. I always know I can count on her and so can my students! Thank you for being you and adding so much fun to our school day! So thankful for you!

Thank you to Redbud Run Elementary School First Grade Teacher Jennifer Burke and Second Grade Teacher Madeleine Gierchak. My son is in second grade and is a very energetic and emotional 7 year old. Our success story started last year in first grade with his teacher, Ms. Burke. She was amazing. She helped him stay on task by giving him to-do lists and allowing him to fidget as needed. She made learning fun and had a great classroom energy. This year has also been amazing because of his teacher, Mrs. Gierchek. Mrs. Gierchek has helped him stay on task by allowing him to sit close to the front when he needs to be near her. She helps him do his review homework in class at the end of the day, before going home, because she knows that after a long day of focusing, homework can be especially challenging for him. Ms. Gierchek also motivates the class by rewarding good behavior and efforts. She focuses on teaching kids mindfulness techniques so they can take care of themselves and their emotions and this helps them learn. We wish that Mrs. Gierchek could go with our son to third grade, but the journey continues and I pray my son continues to have awesome teachers and to love school.

Thank you to Apple Pie Ridge Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Emily Teese, Instructional Assistant Janet Jenkins and Principal Megan Dodd for your patience and kindness. I absolutely know my son was a handful and all the staff came together to work as a team. He has learned a lot this year and with the wonderful work you all do, I cannot thank you enough. God bless you all.

Middletown Elementary School Special Instructional Assistant Hannah Shark is a very recent addition to our school but she's already had a big, positive impact. She is thoughtful, kind, patient and has big expectations for our students. She has been a wonderful addition to the team!

Orchard View Elementary School Fifth Grade Teacher Connor Kingdom brought the National Beta Club to Orchard View, the only school in the area to have a chapter. He has dedicated a lot of time to help students who are academically sound and who represent good character. These students have become amazing citizens in their school community by helping teachers and doing jobs within the school, churches, and other places in the community. I have appreciated their daily help passing out book collection bins in the afternoon and collecting library books in the morning, as well as a little help with inventory.

Orchard View Elementary School Principal Rachel Rinker heard my daughter express that she thought our school needed a school pet, specifically a turtle. She told her to do some research and then they would meet. This involved many meetings, a lot of research for my daughter, including meeting with an employee at the Winchester Aquarium and Pet store, and then realizing it was too much maintenance with a water tank. My daughter pivoted her idea to a tortoise and started her research all over again. So many life lessons have been learned through this process, as well as constant problem solving. After Mrs. Rinker’s guidance and my daughter’s planning, the school will be purchasing a tortoise this summer. My daughter will be able to see her hard work come to fruition, and she is so proud. She will form a club where she will teach others how to care for the tortoise, and they can continue when she goes to middle school. Thank you, Mrs. Rinker, for your time, understanding, guidance and support in helping my daughter along this journey.

James Wood Middle School English Teacher Geneiveve James made me feel safe and respected and she was like a mother to me. I actually made it to the end of the year!

James Wood Middle School Ag Teachers Katherine Hawkins and Samantha Stern stayed after school to help us study so we were prepared for and did well in our FFA contests this year.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about our year with Armel Elementary School Fifth Grade Teacher Victoria Violette. She has made my son’s last year of elementary school one to remember! She is so involved with her students and makes each day fun for them. They are always doing something that is creative and engaging. She finds ways to make boring things fun and exciting so the kids want to learn. She is always putting in the little extra effort that means so much! She makes learning relatable to real life and I have been so impressed with the creative ways she teaches the kids. She is always doing something to build their confidence and teaching them to treat other students with kindness. I could go on and on with the examples of how her teaching has just stood out against all others! My son has always been a good student but this year he has made all A’s and he wants to go to school and learn. I think that he picks up on her energy and positive attitude and genuinely wants to work hard and do better because she is such a great teacher. I am so thankful for her passion and true love of these kids and teaching. It shows through in everything she does! She truly makes a difference and I hope all kids get to experience a teacher like Miss Violette!

Thank you to Middletown Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Elizabeth Poole for your patience, kindness and understanding. I am so grateful to you for helping my son flourish!

We would like to thank Bass-Hoover Elementary School Fifth Grade Teacher Skylar Jaramillo. After a very difficult fourth grade year, my son was hesitant to start fifth grade. Ms. Jaramillo has made this his best year yet. Her ability to connect with him has been incredible and he has truly loved being in her class. She has gone above and beyond to make him have a successful year. We are very fortunate to have had the privilege of meeting her and of our son having her as his teacher. Thank you for all you have done and we wish you much success!!

I can’t say enough good things about Sherando High School Spanish Teacher and Cross Country/Track Coach Megan Roberts and what she has meant to our daughter and family the past four years. As a teacher, she goes above and beyond in the classroom, making a foreign language fun and easy to remember. As a coach, she leads by example by participating in those vigorous workouts and long runs. Nobody expected a pandemic that would shut down schools and events, however she remained available to her team and this was especially meaningful to our young freshman. She kept in touch and made sure the kids were doing ok and encouraged them to continue individual workouts. She takes a genuine interest in each child, and for that, we are eternally grateful. Coach Roberts will always hold a special place in our hearts. Thank you for making a difference!

Middletown Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Lauren Marquess is an amazing teacher and has helped our daughter transition to kindergarten. She's an amazing teacher. She's patient, loving, kind and always puts forth a tremendous amount of time into her lessons and teaching. Our daughter has felt safe and happy under her care. She's also thrived as a reader because of Mrs. Marquess’ attention to providing the best lessons. We are so pleased with the way she has treated our daughter this year!

I want to just say thank you to all of the staff at Gainesboro Elementary School for everything they have done. When I say all staff, I mean all staff. All of the teachers, office support, nurse, school counselors, cafeteria and custodians. Everyone at Gainesboro has been great and I am not ready for my youngest to leave elementary school but because of the great staff and guidance she received, I know she will strive for the best. You are all truly great and will always have a special place in our hearts. I know we will all miss every one of you!!!!

Armel Elementary School Special Education Teacher Deanna Jageman has become such a kind, caring and trusted person to my son. With her, he is more receptive and responsive to school and enjoys his days. I want to extend my biggest thank you for giving her very best to him!

Middletown Elementary School First Grade Teacher Ashlee Keeler (long-term sub) is patient, kind and understanding. And I believe she loves her job and she loves and understands her children. Treats them like there are special and is not afraid of challenges. My son started school in kindergarten and was very overwhelmed with everything and had a lot of behavioral issues in his first year. Now he is in first grade and he had had two wonderful educators so far. They both have gone above and beyond to help him adjust to formality. Learning to work in groups and complete his tasks. He has not been great but he has had so much improvement. I cannot help but give praises and raise my hat off to the teachers. His teacher now is great, she understands him, allows him to express himself and explore separately once he is done with his assigned tasks. This has help him to remain calm most days and enjoy being at school. I love that she understands that each child is different and that not all their home situations are the same. And she does an exceptional job with him. He loves to read and learn and she plans for him by getting him books and providing tasks to keep him occupied. She reaches out to me via the provided classroom app and keeps me updated as often as possible. He loves her, things she is fun and always has a good day at school.

Middletown Elementary School Fifth Grade Teacher Tracie Sipe has been such a wonderful teacher and so patient with us this year! She has gone out of her way to make sure we know what’s going on with our daughter and school in general! We appreciate all you put into each and every day for your students!

Middletown Elementary School First Grade Teacher Meghan Gore is such a wonderful first grade teacher! I know there are struggles she deals with every day as every teacher does, but you wouldn’t know it by watching her! She does not let anything stop her from showing her students how much she cares and putting her all in every day! My daughter has grown tremendously in her reading skills and it’s all because of Mrs. Gore! Thank you for all you do!

Middletown Elementary School Music Teacher Kaleb Branner has been great for my daughter who participated in Chorus this year. He also got them ready for The Bloom Chorus event which was spectacular! You can tell he loves what he does! Thank you for all the time and energy you give to the kids!

I want to thank Millbrook High School English Teacher Kristin Gilbert for her dedication to our children. My son often talks about his language arts teacher, Ms. Gilbert. She has clearly had a big influence on him, and, I'm sure, many other students.

Indian Hollow Elementary School First Grade Teacher Candice Henry is such a patient and kind teacher. She works really hard for her students and goes above and beyond. For example, she planned a glow party for the kids to celebrate them meeting a goal. She bought glow sticks and other things for the kids to have fun. She really loves her students. We are lucky to have her at IHES!

Bass-Hoover Elementary School Assistant Principal Heather Hess has been amazing in helping us positively deal with my child’s mental health and behavior. She has been firm, consistent and honest with me and my child; she is always in contact when needed. Mrs. Hess is always looking for ways to make a positive impact in my child’s life. She has far exceeded my expectations for any administrator. THANK YOU MRS. HESS!

Middletown Elementary School Substitute Sara Beth Ridings is an indispensable part of our school community! As a teacher it is a struggle to be absent, not knowing how your students will be for a substitute or how the substitute will be for your students. However, whenever I have Mrs. Ridings, I know things will go smoothly! She is flexible, patient and always manages to understand what I mean in my sub plans! She deserves all the thanks!

Middletown Elementary School Fourth Grade Teacher Rachel Compher is an awesome teacher! Mrs. Compher has been the best mentor for my first year of teaching. Her teaching is engaging and meaningful. I have learned a lot about teaching from her ideas. She is also a great friend, and I can't wait to continue working with her!

I want to thank Middletown Elementary School Second Grade Teacher Patty Griffith for going above and beyond every day to create a fun and exciting second grade year! My daughter woke up excited every day to go to school and always got off the bus excited to tell me something fun they did or learned. Thank you so much for making this year great!

Thank you to Frederick County Middle School Instructional Assistant Danielle Riley for everything you do. Thank you for always making me smiling.

Thank you to Frederick County Middle School Choral Director Susan Merriman for being a good teacher and having an amazing choir.

Redbud Run Elementary School Second Grade Teacher Angie Gray ALWAYS puts her students first. My oldest had (and now youngest has) her for their teacher and I’m so grateful for all the help she has provided them both years that we had the privilege for having her in second grade. She deserves all the praise because she is amazing!!

My oldest daughter was really struggling when she came into fourth grade. Redbud Run Elementary School Fourth Grade Teacher Kimberlee Stiles did everything she should could to help her while also helping all of her other students. Because of Mrs. Stiles, my daughter has grown substantially since the beginning of the year. I couldn’t have asked for a better fourth grade teacher for my daughter!

We hit the jackpot, getting to have Orchard View Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Ashley Shiflett for all four of our children. My twins have had the most amazing year thanks to her creativity, care and passion for teaching. They feel loved and supported every day and always go to school with a smile. There is no better feeling than knowing my sons are getting the best education with fun, engaging lessons from a person they adore. Thank you!

We wanted to give a big thank you and show our appreciation for Evendale Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Kathleen Nolan and Instructional Assistant Bethany Fox. Not only are we grateful for their academic knowledge, but also their genuine, caring presence. Thank you for encouraging our daughter and making school a place that she loves to be. From science experiments, to learning to read, our daughter has enjoyed every minute of kindergarten and we are so grateful for such wonderful educators. Thank you Ms. Nolan and Ms. Fox for making this year so great!

I just learned of FCPS Interpreter Yolanda Castaneda’s recent accomplishments and feel her story needs to be shared. Yolanda is part of the instructional support team and serves as an interpreter-translator for the school division. Yolanda will earn her Bachelor’s Degree in interdisciplinary education this May. That is no small achievement as Yolanda completed her Bachelor’s Degree in four years, taking four classes each semester, while raising three children and holding a full-time job. Let me tell you a little bit about her journey. She enrolled in Laurel Ridge Community College in the fall of 2012. At that time, she spoke no English. She enrolled in the ESL: oral communications class and brought her own interpreter along with her to class. As the teacher would teach the class she would whisper to her interpreter and ask what was being shared, as well as have the interpreter explain the homework. After taking her first test which she did not do well on, the teacher approached Yolanda and told her that she knew she could do much better. The teacher suspected Yolanda was using Google interpreter and discouraged her from using it. The teacher instead told her she would be happy to provide her further assistance. Yolanda accepted her offer and with the extra support was able to successfully complete the class. Yolanda had another similar situation where she underestimated her own capabilities of communicating in English, both speaking and writing. Another friend and mentor stepped in to give her guidance and encouraged her to do the required writing on her own. She did and her confidence grew. Yolanda graciously gives credit to these mentors who took the time to encourage her and give her the start she needed to set her onto her road to success. Yolanda will start the 2023-24 school year in her new position—teacher! She also plans to enroll in her first class towards her Master’s Degree immediately. Personally, I can only imagine how Yolanda has inspired her family and friends. Now she will be able to make a difference in the lives of the students she will teach. Yolanda Castaneda’s success story should be an inspiration to others.

Stonewall Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Tina Blanchette has been such an amazing teacher. This year we experienced a lot of firsts as parents. Our oldest daughter started kindergarten while we were transitioning to having a newborn in our family at the same time. Mrs. Blanchette was so supportive and provided so much help during a stressful time. Also, I had to travel out of state for work and my daughter was very emotional and upset that I was away. It was the first time since she was born that her and I were apart. Mrs. Blanchette noticed that my daughter was sad and provided extra love and attention that week. Our family couldn’t ask for a better kindergarten teacher to love and support our girl. Mrs. Branchette is so in tune with her students and goes the extra mile to support them emotionally and academically!

Bass-Hoover Elementary School Bus Driver Kim Grant always keeps our kids safe and the kids love her. She is always happy and caring. We love her. Thank you for all you do for our kids to keep them safe and love them.

Indian Hollow Elementary School First Grade Teacher Cassidy Rao has been amazing all year at involving parents in her students’ daily activities whether it be homework or inviting us to read to the class. She welcomes the interactions with parents with open arms. Our daughter is so blessed to have had her!

Thank all the Bass-Hoover Elementary Staff staff who are out in the drop off line in the morning, especially on the bad mornings when it is windy, rainy, and cold making sure our kids get into school and the line goes smoothly while we are in our cars. You all are freezing, getting wet. Not enough thank yous and appreciation. Thank you so very much. Without you all we could not get to work on time. Thank you.

I want to sincerely thank Apple Pie Ridge Elementary School Principal Megan Dodd, Kindergarten Teachers Jennifer Hottle and Haley Carter for helping my twin granddaughters and my family through a difficult time this past school year. I started talking to Mrs. Dodd last summer about my concerns for the girls transitioning into kindergarten, especially because of the recent loss of their mother. Mrs. Dodd and her whole staff went above and beyond to make the girls and our family comfortable with such a big change for the girls. Everyone at APR is very dedicated to the kids and their families. I can’t thank them enough; from the principal to the office staff, to the teachers and teachers assistants. Mrs. Hottle and Miss. Carter took time throughout the year to address any concerns I had. Mrs. Dodd and her staff are an incredible example of how wonderful the educational system can be!! A special shout out to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Department for being at APR school every day!

My son was lucky to be placed in Apple Pie Ridge Elementary School Fifth Grade Teacher Michael Mowchan’s class this year for fifth grade. We knew that it would be a hard transition year and the curriculum would be tough. We also knew that Mr. Mowchan had very clear expectations of his students. To say we were a little nervous at how our son would adjust this year is an understatement. However, it has been an absolute joy to watch him grow and develop since the beginning of the school year. Mr. Mowchan has pushed him to do his best and has done it in a way that makes our son feel good about his abilities. Mr. Mowchan goes above and beyond for his students every day and even commits to their education beyond what is required by offering tutoring before and after school every Friday. My son never wants to miss a Friday! He starts his day at 8:00 a.m. and does not leave school until 4:30 p.m. For a 10 year old boy that would rather be outside with his friends than in a classroom, that speaks volumes! He reminds us every Thursday- “don’t forget I have tutoring tomorrow!” There are not enough words to praise Mr. Mowchan for all he’s done this school year. He is one of a kind. We will miss him greatly next year, but I know my son will be ready for middle school thanks to him.

James Wood Middle School Sixth Grade Math Teacher Kayla Nussman has been a bright light in the transition to middle school for my daughter. She has encouraged her and helped her build more confidence which had led my daughter to improve greatly in math. She takes a personal interest in her students, asking about the books my daughter brings to class with her or what snack she’s eating that we had made. Her communication with me as a parent has been great and made my transition to being a middle school parent easier too.

Thank you to Frederick County Middle School Sixth Grade Science Teacher Amy Conneway for always being there.

Sherando High School Business Teacher Kitty Crosby is cool. I got an A.

I would like to thank Sherando High School Art Teacher Jilliam Legge for always encouraging us to try new things and helping us solve problems. She's compassionate and has helped us develop new art techniques and better art skills overall. She's helped me find my passion for art again. The completion of the Apple Blossom Coloring Book was a huge success. It took many months, and has sold numerous copies thus far!

Middletown Elementary School Fourth Grade Teacher Rachel Compher is an exceptional fourth grade teacher! She cares about her students deeply and works hard not only to teach them new things, but also to show them that she cares about them as people. She has built incredible relationships with her students and her passion for content like Virginia Studies is infectious!

I thank Sherando High School Business Teacher Kitty Crosby for her dedication as a teacher. She has helped me through many tough times in and out of school. Anytime I need something, she has been there for me. No matter how tough times have gotten, she sticks by my side and helps me through it. She also shows the true value of being a teacher. She is great with her work and with her students. Forever thankful to have someone like her teach me.

Middletown Elementary School Fifth Grade Teacher Cole McQuaid has been such a great fit as my son's teacher. He is exceptionally passionate about making learning fun, energetic, and is patient beyond belief. He works hard to foster a caring classroom environment and one based on respect for all. He also works very hard to adjust lessons to accommodate various students' learning styles. We are beyond grateful for all the hard work and energy Mr. McQuaid has put into his classroom this year.

Redbud Run Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Amanda Tenanty and Instructional Assistant Terri Wertz made it an easy transition for my son’s first year of school. They are so welcoming and comforting. They have made time to get to know him and have helped shape him into the fine young student he is today. He loves going to school! Thankful we got chosen to be in their classroom! They will always be his buddies! I know kindergarten isn’t easy but they ROCK IT!!

Words truly can't express how absolutely amazing Bass-Hoover Elementary School Second Grade Teacher Beth Barr is. She goes way above and beyond for each and every one of her students. She hands down is the world’s best teacher. Without hesitation she makes sure each one of her students always feel comfortable and welcome every day in her class. She is a dedicated professional who works hard to make her students successful in the present and for their future. She has a way of making students feel pride in their work and achievements. Great teachers understand that before any learning can take place, students need to feel safe, secure and their basic needs have to be met. She challenges students to think beyond what is written on the page to solve problems and persevere through parts of learning that might be difficult for them.

I don't have adequate words to express my heartfelt gratitude to Orchard View Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Katelyn Townsend and Instructional Assistant Debra Schray. I was so worried about sending my first baby to kindergarten this year, but these ladies have been absolutely beyond anything I could have ever hoped for. They're both so kind and compassionate and genuinely care about my child. Our son has grown by leaps and bounds this school year and we are amazed- knowing all the while his success is greatly thanks to their leadership. As this school year is ending, while we're excited to spend more time together as a family this summer, we are devastated to be moving on from these incredible ladies. We will forever be so thankful for everything they do and for helping him transition into school so smoothly. They deserve every ounce of appreciation and recognition! Mrs. Townsend and Mrs. Schray will forever hold a special place in our family's hearts. To them I just want to say- thank you, thank you, thank you.

Middletown Elementary School First Grade Teacher Meghan Gore has been such a positive influence in my son's life. She has taught him so much this year that goes beyond just the curriculum. He has learned so much about being a student, a friend and a problem solver. The love that she pours into her students is immeasurable.

Orchard View Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Katelyn Townsend and Instructional Assistant Debra Schray made kindergarten FUN! My son had a great year in kindergarten! He learned so much and met new friends. He is already sad about moving on to first grade because he will miss his teacher. I explained he can visit sometime and that made him happy.

I just want to say the whole Orchard View Elementary School staff rocks! You do so many fun things for the students. We appreciate that. Thanks for ALL you do day in and day out! We are very happy to be at OVES!

Thank you to each and every one of our staff members at all Frederick County Public Schools.

I would like to thank Robert E. Aylor Middle School Instructional Technology Coach Chelsea Clagg for going above and beyond every day. She wears many hats in our building and is always willing to help whenever and wherever needed. Ms. Clagg is always there to help our students and staff with any technology issue as she is our building ITC. She is a great co-worker who is always willing to help. Ms. Clagg is willing to co-teach with all subject teachers. Thank you for all you do for our Spartan family.

Our son has blossomed so much this year under the instruction and guidance of the teachers of the Next Project at Frederick County Middle School. His self-confidence has grown so much and it is such a delight to see. The public speaking skills the scholars are learning, along with critical thinking and problem solving are truly invaluable- the benefits the scholars will see in 10-20 years will be amazing. What they are learning cannot be measured on a standard test or SOL but will provide innumerable benefits for life. Thank you all for the love, care and knowledge you are giving our kids.

Bass-Hoover Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Carolyn Romaine has gone above and beyond to help our son be successful and feel like he is a valued contributor. I just wanted to say that as a parent, I really appreciate both of my children's teachers. My son had Carolyn Romaine this year, and she has been really great about meeting my son's needs. She has given him additional resources for differentiation, allowed him more time to make up assignments due to absences, and when I was concerned about the drop in his grades this month due to all the absences from instructional time this quarter, she had suggestions and resources for me to help him, but more importantly, she cares about him, and not just his academic progress. She wants him to be joyful and happy, and reminds him that he is an important member of the class and loved.

I would like to thank Bass-Hoover Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Aimee Anderson and Instructional Assistant Marie Buchanan. Mrs. Anderson is such a kind, loving person. She is an amazing teacher, and my daughter has learned so much this year. Mrs. Buchanan is so gracious and supportive of her students. It is easy for parents to see their children are thriving academically due to the leadership and care from Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Buchanan. I want to commend Mrs. Anderson for being the best kindergarten teacher! She is so patient and amazing with my daughter, who has a very strong personality. My daughter has learned so much, and Mrs. Anderson works diligently with her in spite of the challenges my fierce and feisty six year old throws at times. Just last night, she was explaining how blending works and proudly giving me examples of how words blend together. She was surely modeling Mrs. Anderson's lesson, and looked like a mini teacher! My daughter is growing and learning how to read with confidence. This moment made my English teacher's heart happy! I also want to thank Mrs. Buchanan. She is a wonderful asset to my daughter's kindergarten classroom, and my daughter adores her. Whenever I have visited the school, Mrs. Buchanan is so friendly, and it is so obvious she cares for the students and is so kind to them.

Admiral Richard E. Byrd Middle School Special Education Teacher Randolph Hayes and Special Instructional Assistant Michelle Bock worked so hard to build a trusting relationship with our son. He has grown tremendously both academically and socially while attending the Byrd Learning Center for the past three years. He has had his ups and downs, but will miss his teachers and aides terribly. We are so very grateful for the loving environment he has encountered throughout the entire school by teachers, aides, administrators and fellow students alike

I would like to thank Redbud Run Elementary School Special Education Teacher Kristina Shambaugh for what she has done for my son. I love that my son now comes home and does his routine with taking his book bag and jacket off. Even though he still needs some assistance, it's the fact that he knows to do these types of things. He's not talking yet but with these new different sounds he makes and the things he does in class, I know it will be a matter of time! He loves going to school, and seeing that every morning makes my heart full because I know he's happy there. Thank you for everyone who has had a hand in my son’s care in his class. I know it's not easy but I, along with grandma, appreciate everything you do for him! Thank you so much Mrs. Shambaugh.

Apple Pie Ridge Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Jennifer Jones has fostered a greater love of learning and excitement for my son! Her warmth and caring shows and my son loves to share all his ideas with her. Mrs. Jones is a supportive teacher who fosters an environment where it's ok to take risks and make mistakes.

Stonewall Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Lori Frye went above and beyond to make sure my son never felt upset or anxious in her class. My son started kindergarten in the fall. As with many children who first start school, it can be exciting as well as stressful due to the unknown about their routines. He started off in a class and absolutely loved his teacher and adjusted well! However, after Christmas break, his class was split up and they were all placed in different classes. He was very anxious about this, as he had just begun to get used to this new school life. The first few days he didn't want to go to school. Then I received a message about him going to eat lunch with the counselor and he was so upset that morning. I reached out to Ms. Frye and she immediately responded (at 6:30 a.m.) and apologized for him being upset! She said she never wants him to feel that way and he didn't have to go eat lunch with the counselor if he didn't want to. She said she didn't want him to worry about things at school and he can come talk to her if he feels upset. My son was relieved, and ever since then, I have had no "bad" mornings about going to school! He has adjusted very well in her class, and I believe it is because she truly cares about her students.

Evendale Elementary School Fifth Grade Teacher Keith Halstead is hands down the best teacher of the year! We have three kids who have been in Frederick County schools since 2014 and Mr. Halstead stands out from the rest. He is engaging, builds meaningful relationships and is an excellent positive influence. Our son has had the best year in his classroom and comes home every day excited and happy! He plays football with his students at recess every day and, while I know this seems like a little thing, it actually has made the biggest impact on our son. His involvement with his students really makes them feel like their teacher cares about them. It's so important for fifth grade students to feel confident and ready to enter middle school and Mr. Halstead has done that for our son. Thank you so much for being an incredible teacher!

Orchard View Elementary School Custodian Mitch Rouse was working at OVES when I attended there. His love for the kids, bright and funny personality and dedication to each student has always been memorable and something I am so glad my son was able to experience as well. He works so hard and still always keeps an upbeat attitude no matter the day or student. So much love for Mr. Mitch!

Orchard View Elementary School Principal Rachel Rinker and Assistant Principal Alan Cline are two of the best principal/vice principals I’ve met. They have personally been so patient and kind with my first grader, even when he is being challenging. They have helped him so much without even realizing it and you can always tell it’s not just a job for them but a genuine love for each of their students and that is what makes a great teacher/principal. I know when I send my son to school he will be safe with them and treated with nothing but love and kindness.

My daughter has always had the most caring and sweet teachers imaginable at Orchard View Elementary School. Thank you for everything you ALL do! You are all amazing.

NREP Teacher Dan Fairman has been extremely positive and encouraging on motivating my daughter to achieve things she didn’t think she could do. My daughter has started reading!

Thank you to Orchard View Elementary School First Grade Teacher Marie O’Connor for being patient with my daughter who struggled through the first grade school year.

Orchard View Elementary School Fourth Grade Teacher Kaitlin Follero is a kind, patient, fun teacher. She is also very understanding and fair. She will allow students to retake quizzes and make corrections at home on school work to improve their grades and understanding of the work. She communicates well and leaves notes of encouragement on the student’s papers. She is all around an asset to the school system. Thanks for being you and doing all that you do. You are appreciated!

Orchard View Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Mary Beth Kello worked with me to develop an action plan to promote my daughter’s growth and success. Thank you Mrs. Kello for working with my daughter to build her growth and relationship with you as she started as a new student this year at OVES! We appreciate you!

I would like to thank Orchard View Elementary School Second Grade Teacher Jennifer Ebert for being a fantastic second grade teacher. My daughter has had a wonderful year in her class and has learned so much. I have seen Mrs. Ebert interact with her class, and she is clearly a teacher who truly respects and cares about her students. Thank you for a great year!

Orchard View Elementary School Music Teacher Catherine Oldham is the best music teacher in Virginia. Without a question, Mrs. Oldham is a compassionate human, a passionate educator and a top tier musician!

I would like to celebrate Gainesboro Elementary School First Grade Teacher Aliza Jobe. Mrs. Jobe leads her class by example, always showing kindness, patience and grace to her class. She thoroughly made my child’s first grade experience a positive one. Thank you, Mrs. Jobe!

Thank you to Gainesboro Elementary School Principal Patricia Black and Assistant Principal Danielle Storres for the time and effort you put into the students of Gainesboro. My son started attending Gainesboro Elementary this year, and I want to thank these administrators for welcoming him into the Gainesboro community. As you can imagine, I was concerned how attending a new school would affect my son, but he has been thriving and loves his new school.

I want to celebrate Sherando High School Special Education Teacher Amelia Powers because she is a great teacher and cares about the well-being of her students.

James Wood Middle School Science Teacher Megan Reilly has been a wonderful teacher this year. I feel like I have learned so much about biology and science this year because of her amazing teaching. I also wish to thank her for being a very enthusiastic track coach this season and for helping me learn how to run quicker and more efficiently. My seventh grade year would not be the same without her as my teacher.

Our son absolutely loves Sherando High School Science Teacher Kaylee Pawlak's Environmental Science class. It seems every single day he comes home from school and shares with us something he has learned in science class. He has become very knowledgeable about the environment and ways to be earth-friendly. He has become a very big advocate for recycling, reusing and reducing in order to do his part to help the planet. He has planted his own garden the past few years. In Mrs. Pawlak's class, he has learned quite a bit about the soil and ground. He has incorporated what he learned while planting his garden this year. Thank you, Mrs. Pawlak, for being such a wonderful influence on our son, for teaching him skills he can use throughout his life, and for helping to make learning fun.

Robert E. Aylor Middle School Band Teacher Sarah Paul truly made a difference. My eighth grader reluctantly took beginning band because she had to pick something for an elective. Not being super enthused, she took the class. After the first class she felt overwhelmed and lost. Knowing this was something completely new, we encouraged her to keep trying. After the second class, she was ready to switch out and quit. I contacted her teacher through email for some feedback, and received a response very quickly. Her teacher encouraged her and gave her some extra attention during the next class. I know she has so many students, but you would have thought my daughter was her only student. She took an extra minute with her, and that made a HUGE difference. With my daughter feeling lost and ready to quit, her teacher encouraged her and made her feel comfortable, and she stuck with the class. The following semester she joined percussion class and she just marched in her first parade with the symphonic band, playing the bass drum. She enthusiastically plans to continue band in high school. Her teacher made ALL the difference!

I want to thank Sherando High School Business Teacher Charisse Woodward for never failing to put a smile on my face even when I'm having a bad day. Throughout growing up I've known Ms. Woodward, whether it was through my parents because she and my dad went to school together or because she was my Girl Scout leader. Now she is my econ and finance teacher and I get the joy of seeing her every day during sixth period. Never once has she ever turned me away or put me down. She's always there, not just for me, but for all her students with open arms. She's always finding ways to make class more entertaining and engaging. Even when I'm having a bad day she still manages to put a smile on my face. Words can't even express the gratitude I have towards her. I'm sad the year is ending because I won't see her every day but I'm hopeful I will have her again next year. :)

The progress my daughter has made this year having Stonewall Elementary School Fifth Grade Teacher Joseph Svoboda as her teacher is truly astounding! He goes above and beyond for his students, trying to make sure that each individual need is met. I hope he realizes that he’s made such a difference in my daughter’s life. Teachers like him are never forgotten!

Thank you so much to Greenwood Mill Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Jennifer Hillyard for sharing her expertise and knowledge with so many over the past 30 years. As she embarks on retirement, I want to thank her for the impact she has made not only on her students but the staff that was lucky enough to work with her. You are one of the best!

NREP Teacher Kristine Parker is one of the best teachers I have seen working with special needs students. She is patient with them, kind to them and has a really good heart for the students. She goes way above to make sure her students have everything they need to get the education they deserve.

Indian Hollow Elementary School First Grade Teacher Candice Henry has been an awesome teacher for our daughter. She has an amazing amount of patience. She has worked with me all year long through every behavior problem that my daughter has had. She has tried her best to make learning fun for the class and to provide them with incentives to work hard! For example, she gave the class a glow party as a reward and bought the kids glow bracelets and other fun things. My daughter loves having Ms. Henry as a teacher and will really miss her! Thank you, Ms. Henry, for being a wonderful teacher!

Indian Hollow Elementary School Special Education Teacher Brittney Hansen is a fantastic teacher and does so much for each of her students! She has an abundance of patience and very clearly cares about each of the kiddos that she works with! She puts a lot of time and effort into helping her students. She is also a wonderful staff member to work with! She brings in treats for the staff sometimes and is quick to offer encouragement or a listening ear to anyone who needs it! The school is lucky to have her!

Sherando High School Science Teacher Tyler Bowman made my school experience much more interesting and is my favorite teacher I've had because of his great teaching and fostering of student relationships.

I really appreciate all the things Sherando High School Family and Consumer Science Teacher Ashley Greatorex does for me and my fellow students. At the beginning of my junior year I didn't really have a love for teaching. I knew since I was younger I wanted to become a teacher but throughout high school it wasn't really sticking in my head. Once I started the Early Childhood Education class, I began to find my love for teaching. Mrs. Greatorex has provided me with the opportunity to take the Early Childhood Education class the past two years and helped me truly find myself and what I belong doing. She has also been my "go to" teacher whenever I need to talk with someone. Just having someone to talk to some days can make someone’s day increase drastically.

I want to thank Gainesboro Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Kristen Reynolds for her unwavering dedication to her kindergarten students. She works so hard to make sure each child gets the education and attention they need and deserve. She has taught both of my children and we will forever be grateful for having her as their teacher.

I passed my CNA state exam! Dowell J. Howard Center Nurse Aide Teacher Ozlem Getz took hours of her own time to be able to teach me, prepare me and set me up for success while taking this test. I've never had a more dedicated teacher in my life about my success. I will always remember her after I graduate this year.

I'd like to thank Sherando High School English Teacher Dayna Hughes for being such an amazing and kind teacher. She is understanding, compassionate and never comes to school with a bad attitude.

Dowell J. Howard Center Nurse Aide Teacher Erin Sidlowski was definitely one of the best teachers I have ever had. Last year, I participated in and completed the Dowell J. Howard CNA Program. I have always wanted to be a nurse, and the CNA program was my first step into my nursing career. This was the best class I have ever had. I am so thankful for this program and the people I became close friends with. Mrs. Sidlowski is so kind and really loves her students. She motivated us and made sure we were well prepared for our CNA exam at the end of the year.

I would like to thank the entire Redbud Run Elementary School Special Education Staff. You guys rock and I appreciate everything you do for my son and the other kids.

Apple Pie Ridge Elementary School Secretaries Kathleen Carroll, Judith Rissler and Amanda Skipper are truly exemplary. They are all consistently kind, courteous and helpful to parents and students alike. Anytime we call the school with a question or stop by to drop something off, we are met with patience, caring smiles and positivity that leave us feeling confident that our kids are being treated the same way.

We are so grateful for teachers like Apple Pie Ridge Elementary School Second Grade Teacher Peyton Maloy who have made for another successful school year at Apple Pie Ridge Elementary School. Our son has had such a wonderful year in second grade. He loves his classmates, the fun educational activities and his incredible teacher, Peyton Maloy. At Back-to-School Night at the beginning of the school year, Mrs. Maloy told parents that she is a “glass half full person.” That philosophy has shown every day through her teaching style, communication with parents and the rapport that she has with her students. She is kind, creative, patient and enthusiastic. We believe that in addition to the curriculum, our son has learned the traits of what makes a good citizen in the classroom, community and beyond from her example. We also celebrate that he can now easily tell time on an analog clock, a skill he wasn’t confident in until Mrs. Maloy explained it in a way he understood.

Apple Pie Ridge Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Jennifer Hottle and Instructional Assistant Lisa Bly have made every single day of our son’s first year of school memorable and fun. There have been numerous countdowns in our home as he looks forward to the next special event. Most recently, the end of year ABC countdown has been what he’s looked forward to most, but he also still recounts Apple Day, Pumpkin Math, the wedding of Q and U and Hibernation Day to be some of the best days. Through all the fun, the students are learning and absorbing so much information. He proudly told our extended family what constitutes an oviparous animal and has impressed us all with his reading skills that have grown beyond belief with the help of Mrs. Hottle and Mrs. Bly. We appreciate being able to read through his Book Buddy Bag with him and have enjoyed watching him practice his sight words as Mrs. Hottle adds more each week. Mrs. Hottle’s classroom is brimming with creativity and has options for every learner. We are impressed with her tireless commitment to helping each student learn in their unique way and have fun while doing it. What a wonderful start to his school career!

We would like to thank Apple Pie Ridge Elementary Schools P.E. Teachers Evan Smith and Hilda Owens for making exercise so much fun. Our kids look forward to P.E. days and come home talking about the creative games that they played. As a family, we also really appreciate The APR Exercise Tracker. It has really encouraged more movement in our home and the boys have loved being able to enter their time at the end of a weekend of basketball games or on a day of outdoor play. The little prizes have served as great motivation, as well as seeing their names on the leaderboard at school. The American Heart Challenge was another fun event that motivated us all to move more, as well as learn important skills such as CPR and the signs of stroke. Thank you teachers for your continued commitment to the health of our students!

Sherando High School Science Teacher Susan Saylor has always been a voice of realistic reason, all while motivating her students to do the best that they possibly could. It was because of one of her motivational videos that I decided to apply to the Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars program, and she provided the teacher recommendation for me to join that program. She was also the teacher who was interviewed for my security clearance which I need for the Space Force. The fall of my junior year, I decided to apply to the Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars program which was in connection with NASA Langley Research Center. After an entire school year of learning about aerospace engineering and differing aspects of space exploration, I was accepted into the summer program. In the summer program, I was the Deputy Systems Manager for the Mission Transit team. I was in charge of managing the internal affairs of our team which resulted in my team giving a briefing to NASA senior staff and government officials. This program laid out the basis for my application to the United States Space Force, that along with being a military child. I knew that my chances were low, with the USSF being the newest and smallest military branch, but I had to try. After a few iterations of my applications essay and a long wait, my recruiter informed me that I was 1 one of the 472 new enlisted members throughout the entire country selected to join the Space Force for the year. I will always appreciate her sense of what I call "realistic dreaming." She establishes the importance of having a clear plan to get what you want done, but to shoot for the stars for what you want to accomplish in life.

I would like to thank Armel Elementary School First Grade Teacher Karen Habbersett and Second Grade Teacher Jennifer Roach for having a positive impact on our daughter. Our daughter is in second grade at Armel Elementary and the entire school community has been such a blessing to our family. She has had two great teachers in her first two years there. Ms. Karen Habbersett made her first year so memorable and enjoyable which was such a relief coming out of the pandemic. She was kind, attentive, and so positive with our daughter's class - it made such an impression on us. This year, Mrs. Jenny Roach has made second grade more of the same and our daughter absolutely loves having her in class. The last day of school is going to be so bittersweet for her because she will miss having Mrs. Roach each day. We are so grateful for our Armel Family and the impact it is having on our children.

Evendale Elementary School First Grade Teacher Dionne Hammiel has helped our son make huge gains in reading this year! Thank you so much for your persistence and hard work. You have made a positive impact on our family that will last a lifetime!

Frederick County Public Schools Translator Yolanda Castaneda goes above and beyond to help our Spanish-speaking families in Frederick County. She has helped to bridge the gap in communication between staff and families. She is patient, understanding and an advocate. I can’t thank her enough for all her hard work and dedication!

James Wood Middle School Parent Liaison Viviana Dotson is an unsung hero at JWMS. Ms. Dotson goes unnoticed many times. However, she is an essential part of the JWMS faculty and staff. She serves as the family liaison, a position that is essential, yet many do not realize exists. Ms. Dotson is full of energy and works tirelessly with our families to build relationships and connections. Ms. Dotson is always on the go, yet never complains. Her home school is JWMS but many times she is pulled to help serve the needs of other schools as well. Ms. Dotson, thank you for truly being an angel in disguise! The work that you do is essential and appreciated by staff, students and families.

Indian Hollow Elementary School Fourth Grade Teacher Sarah Cassell creates an environment that makes EVERY student feel at ease sharing their strengths and weaknesses. Students feel like their needs are being met and they feel confident making gains at their own pace.

Thank you Orchard View Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Ashley Shiflett and Instructional Assistant Kattie Lawrence for paving the way to a successful school career for my little one! My child has been the happiest little one ever since he’s been in your class! I’m not normally one to comment, but these two teachers have made my son’s first year of school unforgettable!! He comes home eager to tell and show me what he learned in school day after day! To see a child excited about school is the best thing!

Greenwood Mill Elementary School Second Grade Teacher Stephanie Clarke has made my daughter’s second grade year fabulous! She is always kind, patient and fun. She has built my daughter’s confidence and love of learning. We are so thankful for Mrs. Clarke!

Admiral Richard E. Byrd Middle School Math Teacher Joseph Braghini has been our daughter's math teacher for two years. She has learned so much, and even though the work has been challenging, she has loved every second of his classes. He has fostered a strong connection between all of the students, so much so, that as they go to different high schools next year, I have no doubt they will keep in touch. We are so thankful she has had the opportunity to learn tough subjects in a fun and supportive room! Thank you Mr. Braghini!

Bass-Hoover Elementary School Fourth Grade Teacher Stacey Henderson is passionate about her kids! Mrs. Henderson is a fantastic fourth grade teacher! Not only is she engaging in the classroom, she seeks out opportunities for learning outside of the classroom. She motivates the children to do their very best and takes a personal interest in each one of them. She not only celebrates their academic achievements, but also acknowledges each student on his/her birthday for a little something extra.

Sherando High School English Teacher Lisa Jenkins goes above and beyond for her students.

Millbrook High School Band Teacher James Tucker has made an everlasting impact on our youngest son who’s decided to become a music teacher himself.

Sherando High School English Teacher Lisa Jenkins has allowed me to be able to be the best version of me in the public school setting. She helped me in my transition from home school to public school, and she always made me feel welcome. She always made her classes enjoyable, and she always tried to motivate us. I would like to thank you for allowing me to be in your class this year. I knew that it wasn't going to be easy going from home school to public school, but you made the change as easy as possible. I had a lot of fun in your class, and I can clearly state that I am blessed to have gotten to know a teacher like you, even if it is only for one year. To me, you truly are the best! Thank you!

I would like to thank Sherando High School Business Teacher Charisse Woodward for allowing me to be in your class this year. I knew that it wasn't going to be easy going from home school to public school, but you made the change as easy as possible. I had a lot of fun in your class, and I can clearly state that I am blessed to have gotten to know a teacher like you, even if it is only for one year. To me, you truly are the best! Thank you! You brought out the best version of me, and I will always be thankful. She has allowed me to be able to be the best version of me in the public school setting. She helped me in my transition from home school to public school, and she always made me feel welcome. She always made her classes enjoyable, and she always tried to motivate us.

I would like to say thank you to Orchard View Elementary School Assistant Principal Alan Cline, Principal Rachel Rinker, First Grade Teacher Jessic Latta, Special Education Teacher Sarah Edmondson and Speech Therapist Jen Ligon once again to share with you just how amazing the staff and admin are at Orchard View Elementary. Mr. Cline is always smiling and greets my son personally. He is also such an amazing asset to have during IEP meetings. Something I thought that was scary, he makes it understandable. His demeanor makes it clear he loves the children and families he serves. Rachel Rinker has worked with my family to make sure my son is as successful as he can be. She has called me from her personal phone, well after hours to brainstorm ideas when he was struggling. She always greets him by name and with a hug or a high five. The way in which she speaks with my son is so kind and loving. I really feel like we are part of a team. Jesse Latta is such a calming and kind teacher that we owe so much of Simon's progress to. She is always willing to try out any suggestions we may have, and often invites my husband and I for input. Her ability to reason with and talk my son through rough spots makes me eternally grateful he is in her class. Her gentle nature helps to calm my son. She really is the calm when he is "storming". Sarah Edmondson is a gift from the educational gods! We have been lucky enough to have her as Simon's special education teacher for two years running. Her love of education and children shines through DAILY! She is so upbeat and positive that Simon is drawn to her. She is constantly going over social stories to help my son understand and navigate through a world that is not always kind. He has grown exponentially in the few years he has attended Orchard View, and I have the wonderful staff and admin there to thank. Ms. Jen, his speech teacher, works so well with him! Before receiving speech services Simon would repeat phrases he heard on television. Now he is able to take turns during a conversation, answer "wh" questions, and express himself in many new ways. My family is incredibly blessed to be part of the Orchard View family. My daughter will be starting in the fall there and my Mama heart is at ease knowing my precious kiddos will be in the best of hands. Thank you for all that you do too!

Bass-Hoover Elementary School First Grade Teacher Kimberly Barna is an awesome first grade teacher! Mrs. Barna challenges her students while providing a nurturing environment. Her dedication and attention to her students is unmatched. From a parent perspective she brings organization and a calm and comforting presence no matter the situation.

I'm thankful for Robert E. Aylor Middle School Sixth Grade English Teacher Danielle Proko for her help in my child's successful first year of middle school. Mrs. Proko was instrumental in my son's smooth start to middle school! After years in elementary school and high involvement between teachers-students-parents, it's a whole new world for middle school (for students and parents)! She provided structure for her students and communicated to the parents, which I was so thankful. Her approach provided not only a great segue to the kids' new found independence, she also help set them up for success for their middle school career.

I would like to thank Evendale Elementary School Second Grade Teacher Caitlin Bennett for her hard work with her second grade students! My daughter is excited to come to school and learn every day! Not only that but she has really grown academically this year thanks to the effort Ms. Bennett puts into her craft! We will miss having her next year, but are thankful for everything Mrs. Bennett has done for my child and all of the students in her class!

Apple Pie Ridge Elementary School IRT Bethany Crouse, Instructional Assistant Crystal Pullen and ITC Denise Orndorff start our day out right every morning as they assist students getting out of the car in the APR carpool line. We are always greeted with genuine, happy faces that remember to say hi to all the kids in the car, even the ones that aren’t yet old enough to attend school. Our preschool aged daughter especially looks forward to seeing these ladies every day and refers to them as her “teacher friends.” Their kind words and waves have made her feel special and included as her big brothers go off to school. She is already excited for when she gets to attend elementary school, thanks to the positive interactions she has with them each day.

Middletown Elementary School Fourth Grade Teacher Rachel Compher has made my daughter’s grade year so memorable. She is caring and compassionate and has built a great rapport with her students and their families. We are so appreciative of all you do!

NREP Program Administration Tabitha Reeves has made great strides in making our program continue to be successful. Her vision and her expertise are seen and felt with everything she does. Dr. Reeves goes above and beyond to make sure every day at NREP is a wonderful place to work and our students feel cared for and get what they need to be successful. I'm so glad you are a part of our NREP team.

Gainesboro Elementary School Second Grade Teacher Kathleen Dick is one of the hardest-working teachers I know. She has been amazing and such an important part of our daughter’s growth this year.  She is constantly going above and beyond for her students. Her class respects and loves her. Many teachers say they will ensure that each child receives specialized learning to support their style of learning and/or ability. This is almost an impossible task in reality with so many students in a class. But somehow Mrs. Dick pulls it off. Every child receives attention unique to their needs. We will be sad to leave second grade and Mrs. Dick but feel very fortunate we had the opportunity to have our daughter in her class.

We couldn’t be happier with how our kindergarten year went for our son. Greenwood Mill Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Allison Yost consistently showed she was willing to go above and beyond for her students and we couldn’t be more thankful for her. Not only did his education blossom but so did his self-confidence. She set a wonderful tone for his entrance year at Greenwood Mill Elementary School!

Orchard View Elementary School Custodian Mitch Rouse is a celebrity, I mean custodian, at OVES. Every child learns who he is within days of starting at our school, not because he cleans up messes or refills the paper towel dispenser, but because he is always smiling, laughing, caring, helping and building everyone up (and on occasion causing mischief). He learns kids’ names and gets to know them for more than a student, but for who they are as an individual. He greets our car riders with a smile each morning, even when it’s pouring outside. He plays in our school bucket drumming band alongside our students. He helps with every assembly and is our go-to for sound and technology. He has played in basketball games with staff vs. students. He danced with students and staff at our Blacklight Dance/reading reward. And what every kid knows about him is his love of Charlie Brown and how he shows the movies at lunch every year. None of these things really have to do with being head custodian (at which he is also amazing), they have to do with being an EXCEPTIONAL human being. Mr. Mitch is retiring this year, and he has no idea how many people he has impacted over his nearly 20 years of service at OVES. I hope he knows he will always be a Cardinal, and he will be dearly missed by past and present students, teachers, parents and community members. Congratulations on your retirement, Mr. Mitch. We have enjoyed your silliness and seriousness over the years, and you have left your mark on our hearts.

Thank you to Bass-Hoover Elementary School Principal Darren Thomas and the entire staff for keeping our kids safe this year, always watching out for them at drop off or pick up. I feel safe sending my child to school knowing no matter what, you will always put them first! Thank you so very much!

Thank you to Apple Pie Ridge Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Haley Carter and Instructinoal Assistant Maria Giamporcaro. Our son has truly enjoyed being in Ms. Carter's class this year. She has a classroom full of love for her students where each child is encouraged to be successful in his or her own way. Ms. Carter and Ms. G work together to help their students grow not only academically, but also socially. They have created a safe learning place where the students know they can be themselves. My son always shares stories of friendships and things that he has been excited to learn. Thank you, ladies, for all that you do and for loving our children each day. Our family has been blessed by you both!

Bass-Hoover Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Cassie Bell has gone above and beyond all year to make her third grade classroom feel like a family. She celebrates each child’s successes and supports their interests inside and outside of the classroom. She even comes to Saturday soccer games to cheer them on! Thank you, Mrs. Bell!

I want to thank Middletown Elementary School Fourth Grade Teacher Katelyn Larson for her patience and drive for what she does. She makes it obvious to her students how much she cares about them and wants to see them grow.

Orchard View Elementary School First Grade Teacher Paige Savarese is amazing and we cannot thank her enough for her hard work and dedication this year. Each and every day she challenged and engaged an active group of six-year-olds and we are blown away by all our son has learned. Mrs. Savarese goes out of her way to get to know each child and showers them with love and attention. She even attends functions they are involved in outside of school and that means so much to not only the student but also their family. Thank you will never be enough to show our gratitude and appreciation for Mrs. Savarese. She is truly one of the best teachers we have ever worked with and we are so thankful for her!

Orchard View Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Emily Turner is truly incredible! We were quite nervous about our son starting third grade as we had some health and academic concerns. Ms. Turner was a huge support not only for our son but also for us. She goes above and beyond to frequently communicate with families, she is always thinking of new and creative ways to teach her students, and she genuinely loves each and every one! Our son is thriving thanks to Ms. Turner and he loves school because she makes learning fun and engaging. We are so thankful to her for not only being a wonderful teacher but an even better person!

We would thank to thank Orchard View Elementary School First Grade Teacher Haley Garrison. She is a long-term substitute in our son’s class. Our son was very sad when his teacher went on maternity leave and we were worried he would struggle the last nine weeks of school. Thanks to Ms. Garrison’s love and support, he is thriving! He loves school and talks about the amazing “Ms. G” all the time! Coming in as a long-term sub towards the end of the year is not easy but Ms. Garrison has handled it like the pro she is. We are so grateful for all of her hard work and dedication and we could not be happier with our son’s progress! Thank you Ms. G!

Orchard View Elementary School Instructional Assistant Kelly Lidard is just the best! She works tirelessly to support students and teachers and is always willing to help, even when she is already juggling 15 things. Kelly is always so positive and kind, no matter what craziness might be going on around her. Life in the education world hasn’t been the easiest the last few years but Kelly always goes above and beyond to help her colleagues and our little Cardinals. Thank you, Kelly, for being so amazing. Orchard View wouldn’t be the well-oiled machine it is without you!

I would like to thank Orchard View Elementary School Instructional Coach Tiffany Hounshell, or as our littles call her, Mrs. Heggerty! Mrs. Hounshell is a huge support to all teachers at Orchard View and my class loved having her come in each morning for Heggerty. She was so helpful to me as I learned this new program and was always willing to answer my questions or to help me figure out the best way to support a struggling learner. We are so lucky to have Tiffany at Orchard View! She is an amazing Coach but an even better person. Thank you for your dedication to the students and teachers at OV!

Dowell J. Howard Center Nurse Aid Teacher Erin Sidlowski was my CNA program teacher. I went to her class every day in the evening. I knew from the start that she was an amazing person and a really good teacher. She taught me so many things; of course a lot of CNA skills, but also how to be a better person and how to be the person I am today. She was always there for me when I needed her! She made me smile on my bad days and never made me feel like I wasn't good enough. I am the CNA/person I am today because of her. I will always remember her as an amazing teacher and person, but also the person who helped me start my nursing career. So for that I will always be grateful for her. Thank you for all you do!

My son has differing abilities and has had a rough transition to middle school. The staff at Admiral Richard E. Byrd Middle School has always taken their time with him, given him love, patience, understanding, time to grow. We could not have had a better team supporting my beautiful son! He is starting to blossom and will go so far because of all these wonderful educators!

I would like to thank all the entire staff at Robert E. Aylor Middle School for opening up and helping a new instructional assistant feel appreciated. Everyone has been willing to answer my questions and help show me the way. We have an amazing team and I'm so glad that I made the change from bus driver to instructional assistant. Thank you to my Aylor family!

Middletown Elementary School First Grade Teacher Heather Walther has been an amazing help, along with my daughter's speech therapist, at helping my daughter with annunciation and pronouncing things a lot. They send me updates on her progress and work with her on everything to succeed. At the beginning of the year, a person could understand maybe half of what my daughter says, now it's close to 100% (still some words are a struggle).

Middletown Elementary School Fifth Grade Teacher Cole McQuaid has gone above and beyond to make my son's fifth grade year a success! His passion for teaching, his caring attitude towards his students and his ability to make learning fun have made my son's final year of elementary school very enjoyable. Thank you, Mr. McQuaid, for all the time and energy you pour into your classroom.

I would like to thank Greenwood Mill Elementary School Art Teacher Savannah Grammo because you helped me get better at clay and because you helped me get better at drawing.

Thank you to Greenwood Mill Elementary School Second Grade Teacher Shelly Eldridge for making me a better reader. Thank you for helping me in math. Thank you for a great year.

I would like to thank Greenwood Mill Elementary School Bus Driver Chris Plasberg (bus 69) for dropping me off at the school. Thank you for a great year!

I am thankful for Greenwood Mill Elementary School Gifted Resource Teacher Katherine Fune for getting me on my level. I also thank Mrs. Fune for being an awesome Discovery teacher. Thank you for a great year!

Greenwood Mill Elementary School Counselor Lisa Geisler helped me through the school year.

Greenwood Mill Elementary School First Grade Teacher Shannon Combs taught me how to do math. She is a good teacher. Thank you for a great year.

Thank you to Greenwood Mill Elementary School Assistant Principal Ashley Tyson for a good year. I loved your energy. I loved your big, warm hugs.

Greenwood Mill Elementary School Second Grade Teacher Shelly Eldridge helped me to read. She helped me to do math. Thank you for a great year.

I am thankful for Greenwood Mill Elementary School Bus Driver Cynthia Renner for bringing me to school and back from school. Thank you for a great year!

Thank you Greenwood Mill Elementary School Instructional Coach Heather Vrooman for being so nice. You are the best teacher in the world.

Thank you to Greenwood Mill Elementary School Instructional Assistant Jennifer Collis for helping me be a better reader. Thank you for helping me have a great year.

Robert E. Aylor Middle School Eighth Grade Social Studies Teacher Betsy Sloan goes above and beyond when it comes to planning events for the eighth graders at Robert E. Aylor Middle School. She can often be found at Aylor during after-school hours ironing out details to give our eighth graders events they truly deserve, such as the eighth grade dance and the eighth grade award recognition. Betsy's love for her students shows through her work, as every event she's a part of ends up being a true labor of love. The students and staff are fortunate to have Ms. Sloan and we are appreciative of all of her efforts.

Sherando High School Special Education Teacher Joshua Must is an amazing educator! He worked so hard with my daughter when she struggled with her first SOL tests in third grade and his kindness and patience at that time will never be forgotten. Now, as an educator at Sherando, he was able to test my daughter for her last SOL test. He said he wanted to see her “hit it out of the park” which she did, all because he helped her develop the skills and strategies to be successful in the classroom. For this we are extremely grateful for Mr. Must in our lives!

Admiral Richard E. Byrd Middle School Sixth Grade Math Teacher Samantha Intorre always goes above and beyond for her students. She is always super positive and my son says she always smiles. I am so glad that she is at ABMS! I hear so many stories about her amazing lessons and cannot express how thankful I am!!!

Millbrook High School English Teacher Jenny Russell has truly made an impact on me these last two years. She has taught me how to be tough and get through high school, and she has pushed me to love reading again. She is the most amazing and wonderful teacher. Anyone who has had her can say she is one of a kind. She’s funny and loves talking to us and I know I could go to her for anything. She has been one of my biggest supporters and I couldn’t thank her more.

What do I say about Admiral Richard E. Byrd Middle School Eighth Grade Math Teacher Laura Fieo? She has made all the difference for both of kids there! My kids’ eighth and sixth grade years have been amazing, and Mrs. Fieo played a large part in that. She has been so great at truly getting to know and understanding my kids. She sees them for who they really are and celebrates that, but she is able to balance it with a no nonsense approach that keeps my kids accountable. Her dedication and commitment to her students is a gift. She is one of the best FCPS has to offer! Her work with my children has enhanced their educational experience at ABMS. Thank you, Mrs. Fieo, for all you do and who you are!

We are so grateful for the impact Stonewall Elementary School Fifth Grade Teacher Renee Herin has had on our son's life this year! Your dedication to ALL of your students is truly admirable. We are grateful for all the extra time and effort you put in to help our son succeed. Our son comes home every day with a smile on his face excited to talk about his day. This is a testament to you and your passion for teaching and nurturing young minds is truly inspiring, and we are grateful for all that you have done for our son.

Our son has loved having Apple Pie Ridge Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Jennifer Jones as his third grade teacher. She is kind and always very supportive of him and his classmates each day. She goes out of her way to make sure that each student knows she cares about them. We are so thankful for a great third grade year. Our son has learned and grown in many ways. The staff at APRES is exceptional and we are forever grateful. Thank you, Mrs. Jones, and everyone at APR for your support and care this school year. You all are amazing!

Frederick County Middle School Band Director Gregory Abell is an exemplary teacher. Every time I see my child with the band she lights up. It is so evident that she loves being part of the group. Mr. Abell has made it a welcoming space and helped my daughter to grow in her understanding and love of music.

My son has had a wonderful year in Armel Elementary School First Grade Teacher Samantha Willoughby's class! She has made learning fun and challenging this year. She takes the extra time to get to know her students and their interests. Mrs. Willoughby has found ways to challenge my son this year to go beyond the standards and expand his experiences and learning. He loves to share with us each day what he is learning in the classroom and is excited to go to school each day. We will be forever grateful for this wonderful year with Mrs. Willoughby!

I want to thank Orchard View Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Kelly Brittin for the amazing job you are doing in the lives of your students. Thank you for your effort and dedication. It has not been easy for our son, but thanks to Mrs. Brittin, it has been so much easier for him. Thank you for supporting our son, Mrs. Brittin. You are an amazing person.

Evendale Elementary School Third Grade Teachers Erica Coon and Ashley Hoke, Music Teacher Christina Romich and Art Teacher Allison Kiefer have made my son love school! My son has had the best school year this year! We could not have asked for better teachers who have been so creative and fun! My son’s love for learning was rejuvenated and we have caught up from we lost during COVID. Ms. Coon is an amazing teacher who has such a great sense of humor! She’s who my son will look back on and remember when thinking about his days at EES. Ms. Hoke has helped him not only catch up on his reading but he now enjoys it and asks for books. Ms. Romich and Ms. Kiefer are fantastic!! Their love for music and art is beyond obvious when my son comes home to tell me about his day when he’s had their specials. Thank you EES!

I’d like to recognize Middletown Elementary School Special Education Teacher Aileen Seelbach. Ms. Seelbach is an enthusiastic and patient educator. She finds way to make learning fun while differentiating lessons for each one of her students. She is especially gifted at making students feel comfortable and always maintains a positive environment. She began an annual Battle of the Books competition that gets students excited about reading. She is valued by students, teachers and parents alike.

Sherando High School Social Studies Teacher Doreen Pauley Ricard genuinely cares for her students. My daughter had the pleasure of knowing her the past four years of high school. She deserves recognition for her hard work and dedication to the NHS program and the all the students she takes under her wings. She is a role model and someone the kids look up to for guidance. Thank you, Dr. Ricard, for always being there for my daughter and all of your other students. You have a huge heart and genuinely care. You make a difference that resonates and is not only carried home but remains instilled for a lifetime to come. You make Sherando High School and FCPS a better place.

I’d like to celebrate Middletown Elementary School Literacy Coach Cindy Petty and Instructional Coach Jenna Rinker! These two ladies have pioneered the Science of Reading program at our school. They have successfully received training, created a scope and sequence, provided resources, led a science of reading cohort, planned lessons with teachers, taught lessons to students, problem solved, celebrated successes, and so much more. They have encouraged each other, students and teachers. They created a safe learning space for both students and teachers to explore this instructional program. With their guidance, I have embarked on this journey with my students this year and have truly been able to see my students grow as readers and writers. I want to thank these ladies for helping not only my students to grow, but me as well.

Greenwood Mill Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Julie Morris made my son's transition into elementary school a smooth and successful one! Her patience and kindness have made a lasting impact. He has grown leaps and bounds this year!

We are so happy that our son has been in Apple Pie Ridge Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Haley Carter’s class. He has learned so much academically, and has made so many new friends. This is a direct reflection of the care and planning that Ms. Carter puts into each day in her class. Our son loves school, his class and his teacher. Ms. Carter and Ms. G do a great job with each student and we appreciate the support and kindness they have shown this entire school year. Thank you, ladies! APRES is blessed to have you, and we as parents are, too!

We are so thankful that our son has been in Apple Pie Ridge Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Jennifer Jones’ class this year. The care and kindness she shows to her students is remarkable and very much appreciated. Our son has loved third grade. Thank you, Mrs. Jones, for going above and beyond to make this a great school year. You are an amazing teacher, and we will forever be grateful for all you do each day!

James Wood High School Coordinator of Student Activities Brian Sullivan has taken over the role as Coordinator of Student Activities this year. I just want to thank him for all the hard work he has put in. He always has the students’ and the school’s best interest at heart. I look forward to seeing him in this role for many years to come.

My daughter is in Armel Elementary School First Grade Teacher Samatha Willoughby’s class this year. She began her elementary school career with anxiety and separation issues, making each day emotional. She had plenty of good days but enough hard ones to consider home school. I decided to continue to push her out of her comfort zone and I am so grateful I did. My daughter was blessed with one of the most passionate, caring, give it all teachers there is. Samantha Willoughby incorporates her soft heart with the right amount of tough love that my daughter needed to grow and gain the confidence to be the best student and person she can be. She has been such an important part of her growth process. Together, we worked and helped a child love everything about school. She has deeply touched our lives and I can’t thank her enough.

Armel Elementary School Fourth Grade Teacher Rebecca Comstock is an amazing teacher. She has a compassionate and caring attitude toward every one of her students. My daughter has struggled with ADHD, anxiety and Sensory Processing Disorder. During the middle of third grade last year I had to pull her out of school because she would have panic attacks and refuse to go to school. Mrs. Comstock has been such a blessing this year. We are two weeks from the end of the school year and my daughter has been to school almost every day. She has been patient with my many questions and concerns and always responds quickly to any messages I send her way. She is always eager to try and help my daughter with any struggles while also helping with other special needs in the classroom. Her classroom organization and set up makes it so easy for the students to feel independent and in control of their learning. She is truly an asset to Armel Elementary School and the FCPS community.

Armel Elementary School Special Education Teacher Alyssa Gillenwater is a wonderful teacher. She is very patient and helpful with each one of her kiddos. Even though she did not work with my child directly on a regular basis, she was always willing to help her and I throughout the school year.

Gainesboro Elementary School Second Grade Teacher Kathleen Dick is a beautiful person and a great teacher. She is a blessing to her students.

Middletown Elementary School Second Grade Teacher Tricia Smith has been absolutely phenomenal in giving my daughter some of the tools she needed educationally to thrive, including calming strategies, visuals, and just sound advice. I could not have wished for a better teacher for my daughter for her second grade year. She has conversations with her about feelings and emotions, and how to effectively communicate those. I can’t give enough praise! Thank you for all that you do for each of your students! She is absolutely the best teacher that I could have wished for. My daughter has grown so much, and I’m so grateful for Ms. Smith.

I want to thank Greenwood Mill Elementary School Special Education Teacher Kimberly Schrekengost, Third Grade Teacher Joy Campbell and Assistant Principal Ashley Tyson for making my daughter (who transferred in this year) feel so welcomed and cared for as a new student who was very apprehensive of starting in a new environment. My girl came home every day telling me about all the fun things they do in Mrs. Campbell’s class, especially the awesome PBL project that third grade completed this year. Mrs. Schrekengost has done such a great job with getting my girl to read and to love to read and just love going to school every day because she feels more confident in herself. I’ve seen a shy girl blossom this school year. I would like to give a shout out to Mrs. Tyson for taking the time to know my daughter by name and making her feel safe to be at school. Greenwood Mill teachers and staff are amazing and they put everything into their students.

Evendale Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Niquole Rincan goes above and beyond to make the classroom fun and keep the kids engaged. She's so hands on and extremely communicative with the parents. Even seeing her out in public, she's so bright and bubbly and welcoming to everyone. My daughter is in third grade and this is the first year she's been excited to go to school every day. She has learned and retained so much information this year thanks to Mrs. Rincan's teaching style. WE LOVE HER!!!

Frederick County Middle School Sixth Grade English Teacher Amanda Burton exemplifies what it means to be a teacher. Starting middle school is tough. There are so many changes going from fifth to sixth grade. It’s hard for scholars and it’s equally hard for parents as both learn to navigate a new school and new teachers. We are very thankful for Mrs. Amanda Burton who is my daughter’s Language Arts teacher. Mrs. Burton communicated with us throughout the school year, sharing both concerns (at times) and celebrations as my daughter grew her creative writing skills. Mrs. Burton allowed us to have some insight into our daughter’s daily activities and friendships at school. (If you’re the parent of a middle schooler, you know this is huge.) She encouraged our daughter to be confident in her writing and even provided opportunities to meet and work with a local author. Mrs. Burton genuinely cares for her students and I know she made a difference for us this year.

Evendale Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Becca White has been such a bright light to my daughter this school year. She has taught my daughter many academic things throughout the year, but most importantly she has taught her that she can do anything she sets her mind to. Her kindness and positivity does not go unnoticed! My daughter just adores her and wants to be a teacher just like her when she grows up! Thank you for empowering my little girl and being such a great role model!

I want to thank Greenwood Mill Elementary School Second Grade Teacher Shelly Eldridge for being such an amazing teacher and believing in her students each day. My son has struggled with certain things since starting school. This year, having her as his teacher, he has done a complete 360! She has continued to push him each day to be where he is at today! We are going to truly miss her next year, but we are super thankful for this amazing second grade year he has had. Good luck on your next adventure.

I want to take the time to thank Gainesboro Elementary School Fifth Grade Teacher Audra Bounds for always making my daughter feel special and always encouraging her to do her best along the way! She made sure she built a relationship with my daughter someone she felt comfortable opening up too, whether it be asking for help in school or just having someone to talk to about her feelings which isn’t always easy for my daughter. We faced some challenges last year into this year with my daughter’s education and I let my concerns be known to Mrs. Bounds and we were on the same page and she stayed on top of everything until we finally got my daughter on the right track of where she needed to be!! I don’t feel my daughter would be where she is at today without the help and support of Mrs. Bounds! It truly shows that she loves her job and cares about her students and always gives it 100 percent!! Thank you Mrs. Bounds and Gainesboro Elementary School is very lucky to have you!!

I recently had the opportunity to watch the newest video on the VTSS website entitled "Preschool is Growing Up with VTSS." Both FCPS Supervisor of Early Childhood Programs Angie White and Gainesboro Elementary School Principal Patty Black did a phenomenal job representing Frederick County Public Schools and the preschool program. It was wonderful to see that our school division was chosen to be featured by the state. Kudos to both ladies for their professionalism and positivity. You make Frederick County proud.

Gainesboro Elementary School Bookkeeper Marianne Showalter has gone above and beyond this year trying to make sure that all vacancies are filled and that all duties are covered. This allows the teachers to keep their focus on the children and learning. She has also started a morale program in the school and rotating slide show featuring activities and events for parents to see when they come by the office. Thank you, Marianne, for all you do to make Gainesboro a happy place.

Admiral Richard E. Byrd Middle School Band Teacher William Norris is a patient and understanding teacher. He helped me learn so much this year and always spends time with each student so they can get better. Band is the highlight of my day, and I can’t wait to see how fun it will be next year.

Sherando High School Nurse Audrey Southern has gone above and beyond for me this year in particular. I have gone through significant health issues this year that requires attention, patience and grace for even me to process, let alone Nurse Audrey. She currently sees me multiple times a day for meds and checks. She remains calm, is very detail oriented and truly has a heart for helping others. Her willingness to help me and understand what I have going on means so much to me and I honestly can't thank her enough!

Sherando High School Science Teacher Katharine Gillum has been so very helpful and accommodating with my health needs this year. She's taken the time to go to the nurse and find out how I was doing and to also understand my needs in the moment. Her willingness to ensure I was understanding science all while meeting me where I was at mentally/physically for any particular day makes her a stand out to me. I really appreciate the kindness she's afforded me this year.

Wow, Sherando High School Social Studies Teacher Doreen Pauley Ricard has been a gift from God sent straight to me personally. I really enjoy her teaching style and it's helped me enjoy history. The passion she has comes out in every class. Additionally, I have had big health changes/challenges this year and it's not been easy for me to process. She's been so very understanding and helpful in making school a place I still strive to get to on days that I am having a bad health day. I think the world of her and hope to have her again next year.

I've had Sherando High School Math Teacher William Galloway for geometry and am grateful he was my teacher. Math isn't my strongest class and I was hopeful I would get a teacher who was able to teach me in a way that I would understand. He was exactly that kind of teacher. My health was a challenge this year and he truly saw my bigger picture (beyond math) and put himself in my shoes. He was so kind in helping me this entire year and I am grateful for it.

Sherando High School PE Teacher Shawnn Morgan was a very welcome addition when I had to start PE in January. My health is an issue with participation in PE in particular and ironically, she had first-hand experience of my medical diagnosis. She has been so very understanding and willing to help go the extra mile to make sure I was okay while at the same time letting me judge my own boundaries and participate to my current ability. I am grateful that she was willing to be a long-term sub and even more grateful that she was there for me.

I had Sherando High School PE Teacher Timothy Combs for Drivers Ed. He was a fun teacher to have for this class in particular. He had a great way of incorporating what could be daunting class material and making it a fun class. I was sad to know I wouldn't have him for PE, but was grateful he ended up being the new assistant principal who would end up helping facilitate my new 504 plan accommodations. He was attentive in both roles and I just want to thank him for going the extra mile.

Sherando High School Nurse Audrey Southern has been a HUGE god-send to our family with our daughter this past year. Our younger daughter was diagnosed with some significant health issues this year and she's been a gift to us on many days. I'm certain our daughter would have missed A LOT more days from school had we not had the assurance that she was in very caring, capable hands. She currently sees her three times a day now - and often more. When we get a phone call from her she's never in a panic and always helpful with giving us the clinical information with a momma’s heart. We honestly wish we could give her a million dollars - she's worth it all to us!

Sherando High School Assistant principal Timothy Combs stepped into a new principal role at a time when our daughter’s 504 was needing to be updated with some significant additions based on new diagnosis. We had previously been in wonderful hands and were assured that Mr. Combs would live up to the same standard. He certainly did! He responded to emails and phone calls the very same day. In fact, THE very day we got the final letter from the doctor he had us in the office updating the 504. His professionalism and attention to detail were/are so very appreciated.

I'm certain it's hard to be a teacher and assess every students needs on a daily basis. Our daughter is in Sherando High School Science Teacher Katharine Gillum’s biology class, and at the beginning of the year we had some emails back and forth about accommodations our daughter needed. As our daughter’s health became increasingly worse, she went the extra mile to ensure that she was helping her and to understand what she was going through. I can 100% say I thought we were going to be in for a hard year of having to explain things and defend her diagnosis - but that couldn't be further from the truth. My eyes swell with tears to know she would see the hard worker our daughter is and meet her where she was at this entire year. I know our daughter was one of many students she had, and I want to thank you for helping.

Evendale Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Becca White has been such a bright light to my daughter this school year. She has taught my daughter many academic things, but most importantly she has taught her that she can do anything she sets her mind to. Her kindness and positivity does not go unnoticed! My daughter just adores her and wants to be a teacher just like her when she grows up! Thank you for empowering my little girl and for being such a great role model!

James Wood Middle School Eighth Grade Math Teacher Charlotte Atkins has been a huge supporter for my son. She has been in his corner all year. She recently sent me an email about his passing all of his SOLs. She stated in the email that she was so proud of him. She has been one of his biggest cheerleaders this year. I appreciate that she has cheered him on during this school year. He has made a huge improvement in his grades this year. It's nice to know she is in his corner. Thank you again!

I would like to celebrate Millbrook High School Choir Teacher Brian Kelly. He has been an instrumental part in all three of my children's success in high school. His ability to make every child feel welcome and a part of the choir program no matter how big or small a part they play is not an easy task, however he accomplishes this effortlessly. Mr. Kelly spends many weekends, and evenings outside of school hours tending to and making Millbrook’s choir program one of the best in Virginia. I am very thankful for his time and commitment to each one of my students. I can never thank him enough for not only helping my children to be successful in music, but also in making sure their academics stayed on task. Thank you, Mr. Kelly, for all you have done and continue to do for Millbrook High School and the music program.

Middletown Elementary School First Grade Teacher Ashlee Keeler (long-term sub) came to the class in the middle of the year to take over and that in itself would be a difficult task! Once she took over she thrived with her class and is one of the most incredible educators I have experienced with both my children. I could not ask for a better communicator for my child.  She not only communicates directly with and to my child but with me as well. I feel so involved in my child’s every day class room event and that means a lot to me. My child wants to go to school every day to be around and learn from her, and that is a huge step from last year! Thank you for being you and doing all the things you have.

Robert E. Aylor Middle School Business and Computer Teacher Jennifer Scheetz always tries her best to make her content engaging and create connections between her content and "the real world." She has proven herself to be a life-long learner this year through her willingness to learn and try out new ideas in the classroom. She is such an asset to the school. From running an award-winning FBLA club, to volunteering at after-school activities, and making the yearbook, Mrs. Scheetz is what being a member of the #SpartanFamily is all about!

Thank you NREP Speech Therapists Christine Roberts and Teresa Clay for all that you've done to support our twins’ speech needs over the past two years. Both of my daughters’ speech was very limited when we first started. The combination of starting preschool and receiving services has accelerated my twins’ speech development. Their confidence, vocabulary, and articulation have drastically improved. We are very appreciative for all that you do and making their sessions so much fun! They absolutely look forward to coming. We will miss you greatly as we transition to kindergarten but we will never forget all that you have done. Thank you so very much!

This year is the first "normal" year of school my third grader has had, and Greenwood Mill Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Jennifer Hillyard has made it extra special! Her communication efforts and support of her students has made this year simply a joy. Thanks to her patience, my son's confidence in math and reading has really improved this year. You would never know it's her retirement year - Mrs. Hillyard gives 100% every single day. Thank you!

Thank you to Gainesboro Elementary School Special Education Teacher Lisa DeHaven and Special Instructional Assistant Annette Dickey for the hard work and energy they put into their jobs.

Bass-Hoover Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Sarah Painter believed in my son and supported him. My son started second grade below a kindergarten reading level. He is ending this year above a second grade level, and he has developed a love for reading! Mrs. Painter, you have instilled this in him and I am forever grateful. Environment is everything and you have set up a wonderful one. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do!

This was our daughter’s first year and the transition wasn’t great for her. Orchard View Elementary School Special Education Teacher Mark Adlesberger helped her get acclimated to her new school. Lots of ups and downs but he never gave up on her and we are so happy to have him as her teacher for this past year and the years to come! Thank you for all the needed attention she required. It takes a special person to work with special needs kids!

NREP Early Childhood Special Education Teacher Ellen Dalton is such an amazing teacher! She does her best with our son just like she did in the past with our daughter. We had some ups and downs but she never gave up and makes sure our son thrives in everything he does. It takes a special person to work with special needs kids!

Thank you to Middletown Elementary School Music Teacher Kaleb Branner for going above and beyond. Watching the students the last several years at Middletown during chorus concerts has been amazing. This year’s Spring Concert was so much more. The kids not only sang, but they acted, spoke, sang, played recorders, ukuleles, xylophones and a variety of other instruments. Giving the kids so many opportunities must take a lot of time, dedication and organization. We are excited to hear about music class each week. Thanks for all you give to these kids.

Middletown Elementary School Fifth Grade Teacher Cole McQuaid is what every teacher should be. He is real. He is funny. He is quirky. He applies all the concepts that are taught to things the kids can relate to. Our daughter has been excited about this year every day since the school year started. He challenges and encourages his students daily. Thank you for being you and making our daughter love every minute of fifth grade! You are the best of the best!

Bass-Hoover Elementary School Special Education Teacher Jeremiah Varnau is absolutely amazing with my son! He is always there to listen to my concerns and the growth I have seen in my son since being with Mr. Varnau is simply incredible! He always keeps in touch and never hesitates to call just with a heads up or even to ask a simple question.

We want to thank Bass-Hoover Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Aimee Anderson because she made the transition into school very smooth for our son. Her love of teaching is evident; she is an asset to Bass Hoover! Mrs. Anderson made this year so enjoyable for her students. Our son never had to be coaxed out of bed; he looked forward to going to school every day! Our family appreciates all the fun things Mrs. Anderson planned for her students and we will always look back on this school year with grateful hearts.

Bass-Hoover Elementary School Second Grade Teacher Beth Barr is an amazing teacher. She was absolutely wonderful working with my son. It was his first year being in school for in-person learning and she was so patient and wonderful with him. He was incredibly anxious starting the school in a new environment and she worked with him to make him feel comfortable and created a wonderful safe space for him to flourish. I couldn’t have asked for anyone better for him. He absolutely adores her and respects her and he’s going to miss having her as his teacher.

We want to thank Bass-Hoover Elementary School Fourth Grade Teacher Deirdre Gallaher for showing love and genuine concern for her students. This school year has been a success because of her commitment to teaching! Our daughter has always enjoyed school, but math can be a struggle for her. Mrs. Gallaher notified us about her math deficits and then recommended her for a tutoring program, ensuring that she had an opportunity for success. Without Mrs. Gallaher's care, our daughter would have likely fallen further behind in math. Instead, we have a child that is closing the gap on her deficit and has developed confidence in the classroom. Mrs. Gallaher paved the way for a smoother path in the area of mathematics, and we will always be grateful for her!

Bass-Hoover Elementary School Nurse Heather Arnold is a wonderful nurse. My daughter was going through a tough time at the beginning of the school year. Mrs. Arnold has always been very polite and understanding whenever my daughter would need to see her. She always comes up with a great game plan.

Bass-Hoover Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Angie Patton is an excellent teacher. My daughter loves going to school every day because she makes the class fun. She cares for her class like they’re her own children. I can’t thank her enough for making third grade a memorable year!

I would like to thank Sherando High School English Teacher Caitlynn Sturlaugson because she is an incredible teacher and coach. She is committed to making sure students feel comfortable and have someone to rely on. Her kindness is remarkable and she shows up every day with a smile on her face. She is all around an amazing person and knows how to brighten up my day. Thank you for all you do!

Thank you Stonewall Elementary School Fifth Grade Teacher Renee Herin for everything you have done for our son this year. You have made such a huge difference in our son's life, and for that we are grateful. Your dedication, love, and long hours you invested in your students has not gone unnoticed. We appreciate you more than words can express. You truly are an inspiration! Our son was so fortunate to have you this year!

Thank you to the entire faculty and staff at Stonewall Elementary School. We really appreciate your dedication and hard work. We know that our son has learned so much over the years and we are incredibly thankful. Every single one of you has made a positive lasting impact on our son. Because of your dedication our son is ready to move on to middle school! Thank you for making a difference in our son's life.

Middle school sports are a place for kids to grow and learn. Admiral Richard E. Byrd Middle School PE Teacher and Volleyball Coach Vanessa Eddinger took a group of kids and made them all shine during eighth grade volleyball at ABMS this year. It was wonderful to see growth in so many of the talented athletes and the pure team atmosphere that was created. I’m thankful for Coach Eddinger and all of the coaches and sponsors of extracurriculars throughout the district that continue to enrich our kids in and out of the classroom.

The entire staff at Orchard View Elementary School is so awesome!! I love how you keep the parents informed of upcoming events and you always do special things for the kids. We appreciate you! Thank you!

Thank you to Orchard View Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Katelyn Townsend and Instructional Assistant Debbie Shray for truly caring about the kids. Thanks for all you do! My son has had a wonderful experience in Kindergarten. He had great teacher and assistant. He is already sad about moving on to first  grade because he will miss his kindergarten teacher.

Thank you to Sherando High School Business Teacher Carly Marchelewski for being a great DECA advisor, teacher and friend. My daughter nearly quit DECA before her first competition her Freshmen year. I’m thankful Mrs. M talked with her and got her to go. She went and loved it! She thoroughly enjoyed DECA all four years and will study marketing at college. Thank you!

Thank you to Sherando High School Business Teacher Jason Uhry for being a good DECA advisor, teacher and friend. Thanks for recognizing my daughter for the Warrior Pride Award. I was happy and surprised she was acknowledged. Thank you!

Thank you to Millbrook High School Agriculture Teacher John Borst. Millbrook FFA celebrated 20 years this year with him as one of our original advisors from when the school opened in 2003.

Bass-Hoover Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Cassie Bell is an exemplary teacher. My son has been blessed to have her as his teacher this year and now loves going to school again. She looks out for the best for each kid and realized that they are all unique and need their own approach sometimes. I'm beyond thankful she came into our lives and has forever impacted my son!

Apple Pie Ridge Elementary School Special Education Teacher Bonnie Bennett has been there for my son through a tough season in his journey both as a student and as a person! She has been awesome communicator to myself and my son’s mom in the journey to help him finish elementary school strong. I cannot put in words the blessing that God had provided by brining Mrs. Bennett to my son to support him. You are AMAZING!!

Thank you to Bass-Hoover Elementary School Special Education Teacher Jeremiah Varnau for being you. This was our first year at Bass-Hoover. You helped all three of us in so many ways this school year. We are so grateful for your kindness and love. The boys truly love you and we can’t wait to enjoy another school year with you!

Thank you to Evendale Elementary School Second Grade Teacher Jennifer Knox for accepting my child for who he is and helping him to learn in his own way. You have had such an amazing impact on my son’s education (making the honor roll for the first time ever) and have helped him to find a love for learning and excel! I am forever grateful for your dedication and never giving up on him. You are so much more than just an educator, mentor or friend to these children and I thank you for that. You are amazing in your field and I hope to see you excel in the future to.

Robert E. Aylor Middle School Cheer Coach Rachael Loveless has shown so much attention and focus on the kids at Aylor. She truly is the reason my daughter has found her passion and reason to want to thrive. I cannot thank her enough for all she has done for my daughter, and for many other young ladies at this school. Being a cheer coach cannot be easy and I think we should all take the time to thank all of our coaches and referees in the county for all their hard work. They truly make a difference. Without her my daughter would not have made Varsity at Sherando as a freshman. I cannot thank her enough for our gratitude for her sacrifices for our kids.

Sherando High School Counselor Carmen Thompson has been a tremendous help. Thank you for believing in my daughter and wanting nothing but the absolute best for her and for always putting my kids first. Thank you for always replying to any questions I have or any time they have struggled finding their way. You are part of the reason my kids are as successful as they are today in life. Thank you for believing in them and always being a support system.

Robert E. Aylor Middle School Special Instructional Assistants Donna Affleck, Lindsey Pozniak and Lori Marple are amazing! They have been full-time classroom aides, while also attending college classes and working towards teaching degrees and certifications. Both Ms. Pozniak and Ms. Marple graduated this year, and Mrs. Affleck has started student-teaching and is well on her way to graduating as well. I have no doubt that these three ladies will make fantastic FCPS teachers. Their growth and efforts have been extraordinary.

Dowell J. Howard Center Nurse Aide Teacher Erin Sidlowski was my nurse aide teacher in 2022. She made a profound impact, changing me in ways I never thought possible. She challenged me to be better, inspire me to reach for my dreams, and support me through all the tough times that I needed somebody. She is the one person who made a difference in my life. I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to meet her. Her kindness, generosity and loving personality has helped me become the person I am today, and I know that I wouldn't be where I am without her. Thank you for everything you have taught me and helped me with. We all love you!

This was Apple Pie Ridge Elementary School First Grade Teacher Amber Rute’s first year teaching, and she definitely deserves recognition for the amazing job she did this year! Teaching can be difficult at times. Every concern I had, she handled right then and there. She took such great care of my daughter all year, and worked so well with her. Miss Rute made a great impact with her by showing her patience, compassion and wisdom. This year was so special. I hope you loved your first year. You’re doing great and it shows!!!

Bass-Hoover Elementary School Special Instructional Assistant Chris Jarrell goes above and beyond every day for BHES! Mr. Jarrell goes above and beyond in his SPED aide role to support our students and staff. Not only does he work tirelessly all day, he also does so much as a board member of our PTO and provides his DJ services freely to support our classrooms in fun activities and our chorus students in their winter and spring concerts. Thank you, Mr. Jarrell, for always being willing to step in and help!

My son has blossomed socially in Bass-Hoover Elementary School First Grade Teacher Sydney Nickerson's class due in large part to her ability to build a true community of students who care about each other, work together to help and support each other and feel open to communicate their feelings. She has helped my student blossom this year in first grade especially in his confidence and independence. The social-emotional learning you provide your students does not go unnoticed!

Middletown Elementary School First Grade Teacher Ashlee Keeler (long-term sub) is an excellent and accommodating teacher. My son is quite the handful. He’s a good kid, but even at home, it’s hard to get him to focus…or be quiet….or listen to what you say. I’m sure that he is not that easy to teach. He creates many distractions for his class and probably needs more guidance than most. I am extremely grateful to Mrs. Keeler for not only recognizing and acknowledging that my child is actually a great person despite his shortcomings in the class room, but also for working very hard with him to still make sure that he is learning, and doing his best. She is understanding and patient where I doubted others would be. She deserves to be thanked from the bottom of my heart.

Millbrook High School Spanish Teacher Tonya Keffer went out of her way to teach our daughter Spanish. Our daughter learned a great deal from Sra. Keffer that will help her in the future. Thank you for taking the extra time out of your personal life to meet with her. Hope you have a great summer!

Redbud Run Elementary School Art Teacher Melanie Curtis is amazing! My daughter chooses to draw in her free time. She loves all things art. Thank you Ms. Curtis for instilling this love of art and creativity in her! You are a true work of art!

The special education staff at NREP are some of the most caring humans on this planet. They choose to work with kids with all kinds of disabilities. It's not just about teaching to SOL standards. These amazing people teach these kids how to be productive, caring human beings and work to inspire them in finding things they are interested in and good at. It's not an easy job and is definitely a labor of love.

If it wasn't for Sherando High School Special Education Teacher Kesley Seymour I might be here. I've had my fair share of ups and downs this year wanting to drop out of school but I pulled myself together and reminded myself I'm a senior and I'm almost done with high school. It’s been one heck of a mental challenge but I'm still standing. I'm a walking legend. She taught me to never give up and keep my head in the game no matter how exhausting it gets.

I cannot say enough about Evendale Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Kathleen Nolan. She went above and beyond for our twin boys. The growth we have seen throughout this year has been amazing. She puts so much time and effort into, not only our children but, the whole class. She takes care of the parents as well. Being a first time mom and of twins, Ms. Nolan was always there to calm any fears and answer any questions I had. She truly has a gift and is great at what she does. We are already missing her for next year. Thank you, Frederick County Schools, for having such a wonderful staff member.

Indian Hollow Elementary School Second Grade Teacher Kristin Custalow has gone above and beyond to help my son. Ms. Custalow has been the absolute best teacher my son has had. She has moved mountains to help my son achieve his goals in school. She has gone above and beyond for him without any hesitation. My son, along with all of her students, aren’t just students to her,.they are her family. You can tell she truly cares for each and every student in her class.

Millbrook High School Social Studies Teacher Ashton Strosnider went above and beyond her role as a teacher to offer support and compassion to a struggling student. I would like to extend my gratitude to Mrs. Strosnider for her support and compassion to my daughter over this past school year. My daughter is a student who has dealt with anxiety most of her life. While it is typically something she can manage, this year in particular, it became very hard for her. She struggled in many facets, and without the extra support and kindness from teachers like Mrs. Strosnider, this year could have ended differently for her. Knowing how teachers are overworked, underpaid, and carry many additional roles, I want her to know that her display of support, kindness and compassion truly made a difference in one child's life this year.

I would like to thank Greenwood Mill Elementary School Second Grade Teacher Katherine Ware for being a wonderful teacher for my daughter for the last two years. She has made learning fun and challenged the kids daily to keep rising to the top. Thank you for all the energy and hard work you put in each day. You will always hold a special place in our daughter’s heart.

I would like to thank Greenwood Mill Elementary School Fifth Grade Teacher Karen Nace for being such a wonderful teacher and role model for her students. I love watching her interact with her students because she has a special gift of connecting with them all. Thank you for pushing my daughter to do her best and getting her prepared for middle school. As a parent, middle school can seem a little scary, but because of you, I feel like she is more than ready for this next phase. Thank you for an amazing year. I know you will be one of those special teachers that she will always remember.

Greenwood Mill Elementary School First Grade Teacher Shannon Combs is a gift as a person, a teacher and a coach. Both of my children had Mrs. Combs for Kindergarten. And though their personalities and learning styles are quite different, she found a way to bring out the very best in both of them--as students, friends and athletes. She ensured that they both had a strong foundation for their scholastic careers and that they were cared for. She has a special knack for building an environment where the kids can learn, grow and be each other's biggest fans. And as our luck would continue to grow, this year Mrs. Combs looped from Kindergarten to First Grade with our daughter's class. It has been amazing to watch the bonds between Mrs. Combs and the students flourish as they were able to continue on their journeys together. They are all richer for the experience! And it does not stop there. In addition to motivating in the classroom, Mrs. Combs is an amazing coach. She makes Running Club so fun that my daughter worked extra hard in class to earn passes to participate. Beyond school-based activities, Mrs. Combs can often be found at her students' sporting events on the weekends. Cheering them on with the same enthusiasm she brings to her classroom every day. There are countless individual stories that I and other parents could share about Mrs. Combs. So many that we would need a book to fill them. And while each is individually amazing, the truly inspiring part is just how many people she touches in small and in big ways. Merely saying thank you to Mrs. Combs will never be enough. Saying that she is a teacher does not come anywhere close to who she is. Educator, coach, cheerleader, supporter, friend, role model, protector, and the list goes on and on. Any child who has the joy of being one of Mrs. Combs’ kiddos is blessed, as our children have been. So while it is impossible in this moment to thank you for all of the little things that you have done for our children, please know that so many of their future successes are in so small part because of everything you have taught and instilled in them. Thank you!!

Thank you to James Wood High School Math Teacher Leanne Leonard, CTE Teacher Kristin Guthrie and the Field Day volunteers for an amazing field day at Apple Pie Ridge! The JWHS student volunteers did an exceptional job running our stations and being role models to their fellow peers. Job well done! We can't wait for next year!

Thank you to Middletown Elementary School Counselor Brenda Rosenthal for providing our daughter with a safe space to learn coping strategies to help her with her behavior at home and including her in a weekly guidance session.

Armel Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Jennifer Stinnette has worked tirelessly to create such a fun, engaging, and hands-on learning environment for her kindergartners! She goes above and beyond each week to make the content come to life through exciting activities, yummy snacks, and enriching activities. My son has been so lucky to be in her class this year, and he's shared numerous times how much he loves his teacher. Thank you, Mrs. Stinnette!

Armel Elementary School Second Grade Teacher Molly Durham's kindness, patience and excellent teaching have made our son’s second grade year an outstanding one. She knows just how to allow creative minds to flourish while building a strong academic foundation. Thank you, Ms. Durham, for all of the wonderful activities you have coordinated for your students and for letting our son bring his interests and experiences into the classroom! We'll miss you next year!

Armel Elementary School Fourth Grade Teacher Linda Teets is a master teacher, and we are so grateful that our son has had the opportunity to work with her this year. He has said repeatedly what a "good teacher" Ms. Teets is, and for someone who doesn't often comment on things like that, it speaks volumes about the impact she has made on him. We are so incredibly proud of his progress this year, and we know much of that is a result of the instruction and support he gets each day from Ms. Teets. Thank you for all you do, Ms. Teets!

Thank you to Sherando High School English Teacher Christine Welch for creating a creative environment in your classroom for your students. My daughter loved your class. I appreciate all the work you put in for your students.

Thank you to Sherando High School Special Education Teacher Kelsey Seymour for always being someone I could trust and lean on.

Not only has Middletown Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Maria Kelly helped my child with a learning difference, she has helped him celebrate every milestone and given him the confidence to keep moving forward!
