School Board Adopts 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 School Calendars
The County School Board of Frederick County, Virginia, adopted the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 school year calendars at their meeting on December 12. The approved calendars were developed with a focus on instruction and learning time for students and align with community and staff feedback.
Both school years will begin with a transition day for students entering preschool, kindergarten, sixth grade and ninth grade. The 2024-2025 school year will begin with a transition day on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, with all other students beginning on Thursday, August 15, 2024. Spring Break will be observed April 14-18, 2025, and the last day of school will be May 29, 2025. For the 2025-2026 school year, transition day will be Wednesday, August 13, 2025, with all other students beginning on Thursday, August 14, 2025. Spring Break will be observed March 30-April 3, 2026, and the last day of school will be May 28, 2026.
Frederick County Public Schools assembled a calendar committee in the fall of 2023 to assist in developing the calendars. The committee comprised teachers, administrators, parents and employees, including support and central office staff. While teaching and learning were the priority, many factors were considered and balanced during the development of the calendar. The calendar committee also reviewed past and present calendars from surrounding jurisdictions.
FCPS opted to approve two school year calendars so families can plan ahead, and features of the calendars support increased family involvement at school events. Open house nights for families for each level (elementary, middle, high) are identified and will occur on separate nights of the week to better accommodate families with students who attend multiple schools. The dates and times for graduation ceremonies for the Dowell J. Howard Center and the high schools are set for the classes of 2025 and 2026 to help families with advanced planning.
FCPS also added features to enhance the recruitment and retention of staff. Two four-day weekends falling around Labor Day in September and Presidents Day in February were incorporated. The calendars also include new teacher workdays, unencumbered planning days and a distinction between division professional learning days and building professional learning days.
The newly adopted FCPS 2024-25 and 2025-26 school year calendars are available on the school division website and all school websites.
